Physical, Mechanical and Thermal Behavior of Adobe Stabilized With “Synthetic Termite Saliva”

Abstract: Adobe is an efficient construction material for several reasons, such as its thermal comfort, sustainability, and lower energy cost, as well as the simplicity of its production and execution. However, challenges such as water absorption, capillarity, and compressive strength should be investigated to improve its physical and mechanical properties. "Synthetic termite saliva" (STS) is an excellent stabilizer with high cohesive and hydrophobic power. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effec… Show more

“…It is in the past decade, however, that energy and sustainability issues start to be discussed more explicitly and comprehensively: Revuelta-Acosta et al [43] associated them with adobe's thermal performances; other authors calculate the embodied energy [44] and the cradle-tocradle life cycle assessment [45] of adobe. In recent years, more studies also address the physical and thermal properties of adobe bricks with a focus on their binding materials [46][47][48][49][50] . Nowadays, "advanced earth building techniques demonstrate the value of earth not only in do-it-yourself construction but also for industrialized construction involving contractors" [19] .…”

“…The product can waterproof and join the soil components. Gandia studied the physical, mechanical and thermal properties of adobe stabilized with the “synthetic termite saliva” [ 12 ]. The incorporation of the “synthetic termite saliva” into the soil, presented greater clay mineral particle cohesion and high hydrophobicity.…”
