Fire Management in Veredas (Palm Swamps): New Perspectives on Traditional Farming Systems in Jalapão, Brazil

Abstract: The veredas (palm swamps) of the cerrado biome are legally protected as Áreas de Preservação Permanente (Permanent Preservation Areas), and the use of fire in these wetlands is prohibited. We carried out a preliminary assessment of environmental impacts of the local use of agricultural fire in veredas through a collaborative research project in Jalapão (Tocantins, Brazil). We found that "roças de esgoto" (drained peat swamp swidden fields) form the basis of the agricultural system of this region. These fields … Show more

“…Legally (Law 9985/2000), agreements can regulate the uses of strictly PAs by local inhabitants until a permanent solution is found. The main local economic activities are swidden agriculture, extensive cattle raising utilizing native vegetation, extractivism and tourism (Borges et al., ; Schmidt et al., ). All these activities, except tourism, involve the use of different types of fire.…”

“…The IFM pilot programme started in three PAs: Chapada das Mesas National Park (CMNP), Serra Geral do Tocantins Ecological Station (SGTES) and Jalapão State Park (JSP) (Figure 1 and Table 1) (Borges et al, 2016;Schmidt et al, 2007). All these activities, except tourism, involve the use of different types of F I G U R E 1 Cerrado protected areas (PAs) where pilot Integrated Fire Management programme was carried out from 2014 to 2016 fire.…”

“…Other priorities for sustainable development of the Cerrado of Amapá should include implementation of sustainable management practices, including appropriate management of the fire regime (Borges et al 2016), soil conservation measures (Hudson 1995) and reduced pesticide and herbicide usage (Grovermann et al 2017). Mechanisms should also be put in place to protect the many freshwater springs that originate in, or feed into, the Cerrado of Amapá.…”

“…Ruhland (Eriocaulaceae), locally known as "golden grass", are the main economic activities [43]. Fire is largely used in cattle ranching and subsistence farming as a management tool, and to stimulate golden-grass flowering, much used in the region in craftsmanship of its floral stems [44,45]. The interaction between dry vegetation, high temperatures, and land-use management, results in out of control fires, reaching fire-sensitive areas like forests and wetlands [46].…”
