Las cuencas hidrográficas se constituyen en unidades fundamentales de análisis para el desarrollo de procesos de planificación y gestión. La comprensión de su dinámica, estructura y funcionamiento constituyen el soporte para la planificación del territorio y la toma de decisiones. Sin embargo, la funcionalidad y aprovechamiento sostenible son dependientes de la información y el conocimiento de estos ecosistemas, así como de sus regímenes y capacidades de respuesta frente a las intervenciones antrópicas, variabilidad y cambio climático. Este libro brinda instrumentos y metodologías para la planificación y evaluación del recurso hídrico, así como en la formulación e implementación de mecanismos de adaptación al cambio climático y la gestión integrada de cuencas hidrográficas. La publicación denominada: “Gestión integrada de la cuenca alta del río Magdalena: instrumentos para su evaluación y planificación” es producto de investigaciones realizadas por estudiantes, docentes y egresados de la Escuela de Ciencias Agrícolas, Pecuarias y del Medio Ambiente (ECAPMA) de la UNAD y el grupo de investigación Inyumacizo, categorizado en A por MinCiencias.

Capítulo 1 -Herramientas para la evaluación y gestión integrada del recurso hídrico 13The climate change impacts on land use and vegetation cover can significantly influence the water balance and biogeochemical cycles in river basins, altering the processes of interception, evapotranspiration, infiltration, soil moisture, nutrient cycling and spatial and temporal patterns that characterize the hydrological response in these ecosystems. This paper presents the implementation of the MGB model for the integral management of water resources in the upper Magdalena River Basin using databases of precipitation stations available in the region. The model satisfactorily represented the rain-streamflow transformation process in the upper Magdalena River Basin. The results showed a good fit of the MGB model, especially for the middle and lower part of the River Basin. The research framework proposed here will allow a better understanding of the climate change impacts on the hydrological regime and water balance of a river basin, in order to generate management and conservation strategies. This approach could be used in future studies that integrate alterations in land use and vegetation cover, water quality, sediment transport, and water resources management.

Hydrological models (HMs) can be applied for different purposes, and a key step is model calibration using objective functions (OF) to quantify the agreement between observed and calculated discharges. Fully understanding the OF is important to properly take advantage of model calibration and interpret the results. This study evaluates 36 OF proposed in the literature, considering two watersheds of different hydrological regimes. Daily simulated streamflow time-series, using a distributed hydrological model (MGB-IPH), and ten daily streamflow synthetic time-series, generated from the observed and calculated streamflows, were used in the analysis of each watershed. These synthetic data were used to evaluate how does each metric evaluate hypothetical cases that present isolated very well known error behaviors. Despite of all NSE-derived (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency) metrics that use the square of the residuals in their formulation have shown higher sensitivity to errors in high flows, the ones that use daily and monthly averages of flow rates in absolute terms were more stringent than the others to assess HMs performance. Low flow errors were better evaluated by metrics that use the flow logarithm. The constant presence of zero flow rates deteriorate them significantly, with the exception of the metrics TRMSE (Transformed root mean square error) did not demonstrate this problem. An observed limitation of the formulations of some metrics was that the errors of overestimation or underestimation are compensated. Our results reassert that each metric should be interpreted specifically thinking about the aspects it has been proposed for, and simultaneously taking into account a set of metrics would lead to a broader evaluation of HM ability (e.g. multiobjective model evaluation). We recommend that the use of synthetic time series as those proposed in this work could be useful as an auxiliary step towards better understanding the evaluation of a calibrated hydrological model for each study case, taking into account model capabilities and observed hydrologic regime characteristics.
