Strategies of the small-scale fisheries on the Central Amazon floodplain

Abstract: -A multivariate approach was applied to data of small-scale fisheries developed in Central Amazon, using information about catch composition, environment, fishing gear and season of the hydrological cycle. The correspondence analysis demonstrated to be a good tool for the analysis related multispecies fisheries. The analysis identified patterns of use of fisheries resources by the riverine communities, showing the correlation between the environmental factors and the fishing strategy for the capture of target … Show more

“…A variety of fishing gear was used, of which more than one was normally used in the same fishing trip, indicating the multispecific nature of fishing in Amazonia (FREITAS et al, 2002;BATISTA and PETRERE, 2003). However, most of the fish landed was caught with gillnets and redinhas, corroborating the findings of other authors for the Amazon region (BATISTA and PETRERE, 2003).…”

“…The large seasonal fluctuation in water level (> 10 meters) offers dynamic variability in aquatic habitats and fishing grounds. Amazonian fishers' in-depth knowledge of the behavior of commercial species is demonstrated by their use of a wide arsenal of artisanal fishing gear, which varies based on changes in the hydrological cycle and the type of fishing ground being exploited (FREITAS et al, 2002;BATISTA and PETRERE, 2007).…”

“…Similar to fish caught in other tropical floodplain ecosystems (de Merona 1990; Baran 2005;Freitas et al 2002), fish yield in the studied floodplain ecosystem fluctuated considerably throughout the year. We found that high yields occurred during the rainy season and during the transitional period, from rainy to the dry season.…”

“…Chavez et al (2002) identified 5 migratory/seasonal species from the 15 species caught in the Bay of Guaratuba (PR). The same seasonal pattern of capture was identified by Freitas et al (2002) in riverine communities in Central Amazon, correlated to environmental factors, and Ramirez et al (2007) described the fish caught by some caiçara (marine coastal settlers) communities in the state of São Paulo. Martins and Perez (2008) identified a remarkable variation in the catches by gillnets and encircling nets in Florianópolis, related to the wind direction and presumably to the thermal structure of the water column.…”
