“…Due to its zootechnical characteristics, the A. ocellatus is considered a species with great potential for management in controlled environments aiming human nutrition and ornamental purposes. However, to allow the breeding to become entirely feasible, it turns out the necessity to solve the problem of diseases and parasites upsurge affecting this species in controlled environments, as a consequence of intensive farming under inadequate management (Varella and Malta 1995). Therefore, with the gradual increase of intensive and semi-intensive fish farming in the Peruvian Amazon, there is a need for constant monitoring of the fish for the diagnosis and timely control of infestations by monogeneans.…”

“…Later, Thatcher and Boeger (1984a, b, c) described three other genera and species of this family, namely: Gamidactylus jaraquensis, Gamispatulus schizodontis and Gamispinus diabolicus, respectively. Subsequently, Gamidactylus bryconis was described from Brycon pellegrini Holly, 1929 = B. amazonicus (Spix et Agassiz, 1829) and B. melanopterus (Cope, 1872) by Varella (1995) and Gamidactylus hoplius from Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) by Varella and Malta (1996). All of these species were found in the Amazon River Basin.…”

“…Geralmente, somente a fêmea é parasita. Fixa-se ao hospedeiro, podendo ser encontrada em diversos locais do corpo, como: cavidade bucal, cavidade branquial, fossas nasais, nadadeiras e pele (Thatcher, 1991;Varella, 1992;1995;Malta, 1995a;1995b;1995c;1995d;Malta & Varella, 1996a;1996b).…”
