Mantispídeos Do Brasil (Neuroptera: Mantispidae)

Show more

“…As previously proposed by other authors (e.g. Penny & da Costa, ; Lambkin, ), our results confirm that the subfamily is an intermediate clade between †Mesomantispinae and more derived mantispids. Only the three extant genera of Symphrasinae form a well‐supported monophylum, whereas † Symphrasites is recovered in a larger polytomy.…”

“…The monophyly of Mantispidae is well established based on a series of morphological and life history synapomorphies, with an origin for the family estimated to be around the Late Triassic to early Jurassic based on evidence from both fossil (Wedmann & Makarkin, ; Jepson et al ., ) and molecular data (Winterton et al ., ). Internal relationships among Mantispidae subfamilies have been difficult to elucidate, but there is broad consensus among previous authors that †Mesomantispinae are sister to the remaining Mantispidae, with Symphrasinae and Drepanicinae forming intermediate clades, and Calomantispinae and Mantispinae being highly derived (Penny & da Costa, ; Lambkin, ; Wedmann & Makarkin, ). Our results similarly recover †Mesomantispinae as a monophyletic subfamily sister to the remaining Mantispidae.…”

“…It is very surprising that parasitoid wasps, including the apparently extreme generalist Baeus, did not attack eggs of L. geometricus. Only the egg predator, Z. minuta (Peny & da Costa, 1983), emerged from a single egg sac. It is possible that the structure of the adult web, which consists of a dense-walled silk retreat constructed in a sheltered place from which a sloping sheet extends forward with gumfoot lines extending from the border of the sheet to the ground below (see Eberhard, Barrantes & Madrigal-Brenes 2008 for a detailed description of the web), limits the attack of parasitoids on L. geometricus eggs.…”

“…The genus Gerstaeckerella Enderlein, 1910 is distributed in the South and Central America and the Caribbean and is represented by two species in Brazil, G. irrorata (Erichson, 1839) and G. gigantae Enderlein, 1910. Gerstaeckerella irrorata was previously recorded from Cuba and Brazil (Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, Paraná and the Federal District) (Penny and Costa 1983;Ohl 2004). Both species are very similar, but G. gigantea is larger and has a dark brown transversal stripe at the M-A area in the forewing.…”

“…After the pioneer studies on the biodiversity of the Brazilian Mantispidae published by Penny (1982) and Penny and Costa (1983), little has been studied about the distribution of this group in the country (Machado and Rafael 2010). According to Ohl (2004), 50 species are listed from Brazil, mostly occurring at the Amazon region.…”
