This study aimed to establish the anatomical characteristics, and to determine the density, size and distribution of stomata in the abaxial surface of leaves of different cassava genotypes. The apical, middle and basal portions of fully expanded leaves of genotypes Baianinha, Caapora, Fécula Branca, IAC 12, IAC 13, IAC 14, IAC 15, IAC 576, IAC 90 and IAPAR União were analyzed. The design was completely randomized with a 3 by 3 factorial arrangement and three replications, and the data were analyzed by Anova and Scott-Knott test. The parameters evaluated concerned the number, polar and equatorial diameters of stomata and calculations of density and stomatal functionality. Significant interaction was found among the different genotypes and the distribution and size of stomata in the different parts of the leave, being more frequent in leaf apices. The genotypes Baianinha, Caapora, IAC 576 and IAPAR União characterized the group with the highest stomatal density, while the genotype IAC 90 showed the lowest density and the largest polar diameter, regardless of the location of the stomata. In the analyzed leaves, the lowest polar diameter was detected in the genotypes Baianinha, Caapora, IAC 14 and IAPAR União, while the largest equatorial diameter was found in IAPAR União. In all genotypes, functionality was inversely proportional to stomatal density, with a negative correlation between stomatal density and the polar diameter of stomata.

) RESUMOFoi feito um estudo anatômico da folha e casca de Manihot glaziovii Müller Arg., dando sequênciaa ao estudo de plantas laticíferas. Enfâse foi dada à distribuição de vasos laticíferos, mais freqüente sobretudo na casca e de onde é normalmente retirado o látex. Há grande semelhança estrutural entre esta espécie, Manihot caerulescens Pohl e Hevea brasiliensis Müll Arg. INTRODUÇÃOManihot glaziov11 (Euphorbiaceae), é uma espécie laticifera conhecida vulgarmente como ''Caucho", "Maniva", Maniçoba, Maniçoba Ceará ou Borracha Ceará.É uma árvore ou arbusto que chega a ultrapassar os 10 metros de altura, com copioso látex branco.Segundo Rogers & Appan (1973), é utilizada na África, mais com a finalidade de alimentação, do que com o fim de extração do látex, embora Canella et al. (1968) e Tokarnia et al. (1979) considerem-na como tóxica para bovinos e outros herbívoros.Bello (1908) tem-na como nutritiva, já que o ácido cianidrico não impede que as folhas sejam apetecida pelo gado e as raízes sejam comestíveis, bem como as amêndoas das sementes, que também se prestam para a fabricação de sabão.Atualmente, esta Maniçoba tem sido largamente depredada, sendo o seu tronco usado na fabricação de caixotes e tamancos.A metodologia de extração do látex, segundo Bello (1908), D'Utra (1909), Cutler (1946), Forman (1943), Campos (1978, além de comunicações pessoais de antigos maniçobeiros é a seguinte: a) A maioria das árvores é sangrada a cerca de 1 metro de altura do solo, com uma machadinha em inei soes oblíquas, horizontais ou em forma de V, ou ainda combinando as diversas formas, sendo depositado o látex era pequenas tigelinhas de lata, presas no caule. b) São feitos pequenos cortes na casca, ou mesmo retirada a periderrae, e o látex exudado coagula-se na própria casca em forma de gotas, daí o nome de "choro". Esse tipo de borracha é considerado por muitos como o de melhor qualidade. c) São feitas incisões irregulares nas partes mais baixas do tronco. 0 látex recolhido no chão é também conhecido como "chapa" e ê considerado como o tipo inferior.

This study aimed to analyze the leaf anatomy of Manihot caerulescens, with emphasis on the ontogeny and secretion composition of the laticifers. Leaf samples were submitted the usual techniques in plant anatomy and histochemical tests to identify the main classes of secondary metabolites. The analyzes were performed using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaves have a single layered epidermis coated by a uniform cuticle. The epidermal cells are elongated and papillose on the leaf abaxial surface of leaves. The mesophyll is isobilateral and the vascular bundle of the midrib is collateral. The laticifers are originated from ground meristem and procambium, and are of articulated anastomosing type. Besides the laticifers, two types of idioblasts were found: the secretory idioblasts, with a dense content, and the calcium oxalate druses idioblasts. Histochemical tests revealed different classes of chemicals for both secretory idioblasts and laticifers. In idioblasts, a positive reaction was detected for the general phenolic compounds, proteins, total polysaccharides and tannins. The laticifers reacted positively to total lipids and acids, essences, total polysaccharides and rubber. The individuals analyzed here are from caatinga and their leaf anatomical structure showed to be different from that described for the same species growing in the cerrado.
