In a mycological survey of Waikato pastures, Thozetella tocklaiensis was isolated from the roots of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), sweet vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum), and browntop (Agrostis capillaris). Initially, isolates grew as sterile dematiaceous mycelium in culture but when grown on nutrient poor media under near-UV light produced conidia in sporodochia characteristic of Thozetella tocklaiensis. Electron microscopy revealed that conidiophores within each sporodochium were surrounded by excipular hyphae which produced sterile microawns. The fungus produced sporodochia on roots of grass and clover seedlings and hyphae penetrated epidermal and cortical root tissue of seedlings without causing visible disease symptoms. This fungus has not previously been reported in New Zealand and is unrecorded from plant roots. B96021

Hyphomycetes são freqüentemente isolados de material vegetal em decomposição participando ativamente da degradação de folhas. Folíolos de Caesalpinia echinata foram coletados em duas áreas no Estado de São Paulo: Parque Municipal do Ibirapuera e Reserva Biológica de Mogi-Guaçu, de fevereiro de 2005 a fevereiro de 2006. Os folíolos foram tratados pela técnica de lavagem sucessiva de substratos, colocados em câmaras-úmidas e deixados a temperatura ambiente. Trinta e dois Hyphomycetes foram isolados. Destes, quatro espécies são descritas pela primeira vez no Brasil, sete são novas para o Estado de São Paulo e dezessete são novas ocorrências nesse substrato.

Aspergillus is a genus of molds named after the morphological structure that bears asexual spores, the aspergillum, which resembles a liturgical device. This genus contains several species of positive or negative economic importance in industry, agriculture and medicine. The majority of aspergilli, including most species of economic importance, are known to reproduce only by asexual spores. Genome projects have been completed for A. fumigatus, A. nidulans, A. niger and A. oryzae; several other species are also being sequenced. The data from these genome projects have been useful in elucidating aspects of phylogeny, the evolution of sexuality and the extent of secondary metabolite diversity. To date, however, the impact on drug discovery, diagnosis of aspergillosis, and our understanding of fungal pathogenesis has been less pronounced.
