This study investigated the metazoan parasite fauna in Peckoltia braueri and Pterygoplichthys pardalis from a tributary of the Amazon River system, in northern Brazil. In P. braueri, 630 parasites were collected, belonging to Unilatus unilatus, Nothogyrodactylus sp., Genarchella genarchella, Proteocephalus sp., Gorytocephalus elongorchis, Dolops longicauda and Hirudinea gen. sp., with a dominance of monogenean species. In P. pardalis, 120 parasites were collected, belonging to U. unilatus, Acanthostomum gnerii and Gorytocephalus elongorchis, and this acanthocephalan was the dominant species. In both hosts, the parasites presented clumped distribution, high prevalence, low abundance, low Shannon diversity, and low species richness, with a predominance of helminth species. In P. braueri, host length was positively correlated with parasite species richness and Shannon index. There was no difference in the body condition of parasitized and non-parasitized fishes in either host. This was the first report of these parasites in P. braueri and P. pardalis. Fauna de metazoários parasitando Peckoltia braueri e Pterygoplichthys pardalis (Loricariidae), bagres do nordeste da Amazônia brasileira RESUMOEste estudo investigou a fauna de parasitos metazoários em Peckoltia braueri e Pterygoplichthys pardalis de um tributário do sistema do Rio Amazonas, no Amapá, norte do Brasil. Em P. braueri foram coletados 630 parasitos das espécies Unilatus unilatus, Nothogyrodactylus sp., Genarchella genarchella, Proteocephalus sp., Gorytocephalus elongorchis, Dolops longicauda e Hirudinea gen. sp., com dominância das espécies de monogenoideas. Em P. pardalis foram coletados 120 parasitos das espécies U. unilatus, Acanthostomum gnerii e Gorytocephalus elongorchis, sendo este acantocéfalo a espécie dominante. Os parasitos em ambos hospedeiros apresentaram dispersão agregada, elevada prevalência, baixa abundância, baixa diversidade de Shannon e baixa riqueza de espécies, com predominância de espécies de helmintos. Em P. braueri, o comprimento dos hospedeiros apresentou correlação positiva com a riqueza de espécies de parasitos e o índice de Shannon. Não houve diferença entre a condição corporal de peixes parasitados e não parasitados para os dois hospedeiros. Este foi o primeiro relato desses parasitos para P. braueri e P. pardalis.

Influence of host sex and age on infracommunities of metazoan parasites ofProchilodus lineatus(Valenciennes, 1836) (Prochilodontidae) of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil

Summary :149 specimens of Prochilodus lineatus were collected on the upper Paraná River floodplain. Of these, 121 (82.1 %) were parasitized. 33 species of metazoan parasites were recorded. Rhinonastes pseudocapsaloideum was classified as secondary, while all other species were classified as satellites. Ergasilus sp. and Tereancistrum curimba were positively associated and their abundances were positively correlated. Saccocoelioides magnorchis and S. nanii were positively associated and their abundances were positively correlated. The mean diversity in the infracommunities of P. lineatus was H = 0.6875 ± 0.4398. Host standard length was not correlated with parasite diversity (rs = 0.1726; p = 0.0533). The abundances of T. curimba and Kritskyia boegeri, and S. magnorchis and S. nanii were significantly correlated with host length. Correlation between fish age and parasite prevalence was not significant. The abundances of Amplexibranchius sp., K. boegeri and S. magnorchis were significantly different among host age classes. For Amplexibranchius sp., the three-year old age class had more parasites. For K. boegeri, the intermediate age classes had the most numerous parasites. Only Tereancistrum curimba showed significant difference in the prevalence between the sexes, with females being more parasitized. Studies about this species have broached prominent aspects of population structure and biology (e.g. Terraes et al., 1999;Lizama, 2000; Ranzani Paiva et al., 2000). Important information about the parasitic fauna of this host has recently been reported. Takemoto et al. (2002) described a new species of monogenean parasite of the urinary bladder, Domingues et al. (2002) described a new species of monogenean parasite of the nasal cavity and Lizama et al. (2004) described two species of gill monogeneans. As regards parasite ecology, Martins et al. (2001), referred only to seasonal variation in parasitism levels of the acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus curemai. The object of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the host Prochilodus lineatus and the metazoan parasite fauna, including the influence of host sex and length/age on parasite infrapopulations. Currently many species of Amazon sailfin catfishes (Loricariidae) have been introduced to wild environments outside their native range. There is, however, little knowledge about their role as vectors of parasites that can infect native fish or even humans through its consumption. The aim of the present study was to determine the parasitic fauna of the invasive sailfin catfish species Pterygoplichthys pardalis (leopard pleco) and P. disjunctivus (vermiculated pleco) from freshwater systems in the southeast of Mexico. Four ectoparasite species were found in P. pardalis (1 protozoan: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis; 2 monogeneans: Urocleidoides vaginoclastrum and Heteropriapulus heterotylus; 1 digenean: Clinostomum sp.), and only one in Heteropriapulus disjunctivus (H. heterotylus). No endoparasites were found. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, U. vaginoclaustrum and Clinostomum sp., were considered as rare species (prevalence <5%) since they were found in a single individual of P. pardalis. H. heterotylus was the only species shared among both host species and it occurs throughout the year. This monogenean species represents 96% of total parasites recorded in P. pardalis and 100% in P. disjunctivus. Monthly values of prevalence, intensity and abundance of H. heterotylus in both host species showed important intra-annual variations, but not differ significantly between both hosts. Actualmente muchas especies de peces conocidos como plecos o peces diablo (Loricariidae) han sido introducidas en ambientes silvestres fuera de su área de distribución natural. Sin embargo, hay poco conocimiento acerca de su papel como vectores de parásitos que puedan infectar a los peces nativos o incluso los seres humanos a través de su consumo. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la fauna parasitaria de las especies de plecos Pterygoplichthys pardalis (pleco leopardo) y P. disjunctivus (pleco vermiculado) en sistemas de agua dulce del sureste de México. Fueron encontradas cuatro especies de ectoparásitos en P. pardalis (1 protozoario: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis; 2 monogeneos: Urocleidoides vaginoclastrum y Heteropriapulus heterotylus; 1 digeneo: Clinostomum sp.) y una en P. disjunctivus (H. heterotylus). No se encontraron endoparásitos. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, U. vaginoclaustrum y Clinostomum sp. fueron consideradas como especies raras (prevalencia <5%), ya que estuvieron en un solo individuo de P. pardalis. Heteropriapulus heterotylus fue la única especie compartida entre ambas especies de peces y que estuvo presente durante todo el año, y representó el 96% del total de parásitos registrados en P. pardalis y el 100% en P. disjunctivus. La prevalencia, intensidad media y abundancia media de H. heterotylus mostraron importantes variaciones intra-anuales en ambas especies de peces, pero no difirió significativamente entre ambos hospederos.
