Wetlands cover approximately 6% of the Earth´s surface. They are frequently found at the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and are strongly dependent on the water cycle. For this reason, wetlands are extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Mangroves and floodplain ecosystems are some of the most important environments for the Amazonian population, as a source of proteins and income, and are thus the types of wetlands chosen for this review. Some of the main consequences that can be predicted from climate change for wetlands are modifications in hydrological regimes, which can cause intense droughts or inundations. A possible reduction in rainfall can cause a decrease of the areas of mangroves and floodplains, with a consequent decline in their species numbers. Conversely, an increase in rainfall would probably cause the substitution of plant species, which would not be able to survive under new conditions for a long period. An elevation in water temperature on the floodplains would cause an increase in frequency and duration of hypoxic or anoxic episodes, which might further lead to a reduction in growth rates or the reproductive success of many species. In mangroves, an increase in water temperature would influence the sea level, causing losses of these environments through coastal erosion processes. Therefore, climate change will likely cause the loss of, or reduction in, Amazonian wetlands and will challenge the adaptability of species, composition and distribution, which will probably have consequences for the human population that depend on them.Keywords: global warming, wetlands, mangrove, floodplains, Amazonia. Possíveis impactos das mudanças climáticas em áreas úmidase sua biota na Amazônia brasileira ResumoAs áreas úmidas cobrem aproximadamente 6% da superfície da terra e são frequentemente encontradas na interface entre ecossistemas terrestres e aquáticos e fortemente dependentes do ciclo da água. Por esta razão são extremamente vulneráveis aos efeitos das alterações do clima. Os ecossistemas de manguezais e várzeas são muito importantes para os seres humanos da Amazônia, porque são de onde eles extraem algumas das principais fontes de proteínas e renda, e, por isso, foram os dois tipos de áreas úmidas escolhidos para esse estudo. Entre as principais consequências das mudanças climáticas previstas para esses ambientes estão as alterações nos regimes hidrológicos, que podem causar grandes secas ou inundações. A possível redução das chuvas pode causar a diminuição das áreas de mangue e várzea, provocando um rápido declínio de suas espécies. Por outro lado, o aumento das chuvas teria como provável consequência a substituição de espécies de plantas, que não seriam capazes de sobreviver sob as novas condições por um longo período de tempo. The finding of a Neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis) cub occupying a shelter in a hollowed treetop is reported. The observation was made in a seasonally flooded forest in Central Amazonia, during the high water peak of the annual inundation cycle. A literature review indicates that this is the first description of a shelter of the species, both in a hollowed tree and in Amazonia. This observation can indicate a strong relationship between the species' breeding cycle with the annual dynamics of Amazonian rivers. We discuss potential advantages and disadvantages of breeding when water level is high. ResumoA paisagem da várzea modifica-se todos os anos nas chamadas fases terrestre e aquática, em conformidade com a dinâmica fluvial, a qual é responsável pela destruição de parte das margens dos rios, o que geralmente conduz à destruição de grandes áreas de vegetação. Abstract Study of herbaceous vegetation of the floodplain in CentralAmazonia. The floodplain landscape changes each year from the aquatic to the terrestrial phase according to the river dynamic which is responsible for the destruction of part of the riverbank that leads to the destruction of large extent of vegetation. On the other hand, the sediment deposition makes at the same time a new habitat. Echinochloa polystachya (Kunth) Hitchc. herbaceous vegetation at Marchantaria Island, Amazonas state was studied. INTRODUÇÃOA região amazônica compreende uma larga faixa que se estende ao longo das fronteiras norte, onde é banhada pelo oceano Atlântico, passando pelas Guianas. Seguindo para o oeste, em direção ao oceano Pacífico, alcança a Cordilheira dos Andes. Abrange nove países da América do Sul e nove estados no território brasileiro, sendo uma região de notável riqueza étnica, cultural, florística e faunística. Nessa grande extensão ainda verde, destacam-se dois ecossistemas, a saber, a terra firme e as áreas inundáveis.Poucas áreas no planeta permanecem inundadas de sete até quinze metros acima da cota do nível do mar da localidade durante cerca de seis meses por ano. Esse fenômeno acontece no sudoeste da Ásia, no oeste do continente africano e ao longo dos rios da Amazônia (AYRES et al., 1998).A vegetação inundável que coloniza esses ambientes está inserida em um gradiente de diferentes níveis de alagamento, que definem hábitats desde permanentemente aquáticos até totalmente terrestres. A amplitude de inundação nessas áreas varia entre 10 m e 15 m acima da cota do nível do mar da localidade, e o tempo de inundação, de 50 até 270 dias, todos os anos, conforme a altura de relevo considerada na planície de inundação (JUNK, 1989;FERREIRA, 1997).A área total da planície inundável da Amazônia é de 1.350,000 km 2 , e cerca de dois terços desse total, são áreas de várzea (JUNK, 1993).
