The 1,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid content of cupu (Theobroma grandiflorum Schum.)

Abstract: The 1 ,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid content of cu p u ( Theobroma grandiflorum Schum.) (1975) found in contrast to Freise's report ( 1935) neither theobromine nor caffeine but the 1 ,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid (TMU) . We have determined the TMU contents by the isotope di lution method using ring-labelled TMU whicn w as synthes ized for this purpose . The average vnl ues for the seeds are listed below .

“…Cupu (Theobroma grandiflorum), contains 0.25% liberine in cotyledons and 0.08% in the nut shells (Baumann and Wanner, 1980). Hammerstone et al (1994) reported that theacrine is the principal purine alkaloid in seeds of eleven species of Theobroma and nine species of Herrania.…”

“…Conversely, many individuals, particularly those with underlying medical conditions (e.g., hypertension), report an increased incidence of anxiety, nervousness, and jitteriness at caffeine doses >400 mg/day. 18 Variation in caffeine sensitivity has spurred the discovery of wider therapeutic index natural stimulant platforms that include a unique class of purine alkaloids known as methylurates 4,7,8,19 . For example, the methylurate theacrine exerts its pharmacologic effects via adenosine receptor modulation 20 , a property shared by its structural analog caffeine 21 .…”
