Show more

“…Rainfall decreases towards the Tropics reaching more than 2000 mm/year in the southeast of Brazil and less than 1500 mm/year in the Peruvian-Bolivian plain and in the Roraima Brazilian state which is protected from the Atlantic humid flows by the Guyanese shield. This distribution is consistent with the results of Ratisbona (1976), Salati et al (1978), Marquez et al (1980), Figueroa and Nobre (1990), Fisch et al (1998), andMarengo (2004), among others. However, our rainfall map yields more information about the Andean countries.…”

“…Abundant rainfall is also registered near the Amazon River delta where the sea-breeze effect is important (Salati et al, 1978). Salati et al (1978) calculated a mean of 2400 mm/year in the central region of the AB and Marquez et al (1980) and Fisch et al (1998) a mean 2300 mm rainfall for the Brazilian AB. Different studies, for the whole AB, give values from 2000 to 3664 mm, with the greater part between 2000 and 2200 mm, as found by Marengo and Nobre (2001).…”

“…Several studies investigating the long‐term water balance of the Amazon River basin have focused on understanding the surface branch (Costa & Foley, ; Franken & Leopoldo, ; Jordan & Heuveldop, ; Leopoldo et al, ; Marengo, ; Marques et al, ; Russell & Miller, ; Shuttleworth, ; Villa Nova et al, ; Vörösmarty et al, ; Zeng, ). In general, these studies have addressed water balance at the Óbidos gauging station, with some reporting an exact (see supporting information Table S) closure accounting for a perfect surface balance in the basin.…”
