Dermanyssus gallinae is one of the most important ectoparasite of laying hens. The intensive use of chemicals has led to the selection of resistant mite populations. The difficulty in controlling the mites has promoted the search for alternative products. Thereby, the aim of this study was to assess in laboratory the acaricidal activity of inert mineral powders against D. gallinae, in dust and water suspensions (5 and 10%) treatments. The products were tested against eggs, nymphs and adults of the mite. There were differences in the activity of tested products. Some products based on diatomaceous earth, kaolin and talc, applied in powder form on adults of the mite were more efficient and selected for subsequent tests. In liquid suspension bioassay it was observed no ovicidal activity of any of the tested products. However, the products were efficient on the nymphs with no difference between both products and concentrations. The activity of diatomaceous earth and Kaolin 2120 in 5 and 10% water suspension on adults was significatively higher than other treatments against adults. There was no difference between the treatments in residual activity. The morphological characterization and identification of diatom frustules present in the product PosturaSec ® indicated prevalence of the genus Brachysira Kützing, density of 5.7 x 10 7 valves/g, 200 µm size particles and 86.2% of silicon.

The lesser mealworm (LMW) is the most important pest in poultry production. Insects are associated to avian pathogens, mainly Salmonella. Its control is based on chemical insecticide, with limited efficacy in population reduction. Also, insect populations are resistant to the main active ingredients used. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a mineral dust that has activity against the LMW when used in dust application. No information is available about DE liquid preparation against this insect. Thus, bioassays were conducted aiming to develop a strategy for DE liquid preparation to this insect control. In laboratory the ideal concentration for poultry house experiment was estimated and the effect of insect contact with poultry litter or chicken feed after application was checked. In the poultry house, DE liquid preparation (10% in water, 1 L•m -2 ) was applied on the dirt soil of a cleaned and empty poultry house. In the control poultry house, a chemical insecticide was used (cypermethrin 15 g + chlorpyriphos 25 g + piperonyl butoxide 15 g) (1 L•m -2 ). DE at all concentrations was efficient mainly when insects were dried for 24 h before contact with a substrate. In poultry house, both treatments obtained similar results at 15 days after treatment (94% of reduction of insect population). At 45 days after treatment, the insect population with DE treatment increased 39% while the insect population remained 17% smaller than the initial population with a chemical insecticide. DE liquid preparation has potential to be used as a safe treatment in LMW population management, as a shock treatment.

Cabbage larvae (Pieris brassicae, Lepidoptera: Pieridae) are an important pest in organic farming; therefore, biological pest control alternatives are being sought. The effect of Beauveria bassiana (Bb) combined with diatomaceous earth (DE) in a polyvinyl alcohol flask (Bbl), as well as the combination between them (Bb+DE, BbI+DE) on P. brassicae and Galleria mellonella larvae inoculated by aspersion and immersion was evaluated. Prior to the experiment, the viability of B. bassiana was assessed and one of three commercial brands of diatomaceous earth was selected based on the shape and damage caused to G. mellonella. Radial shapes with and without edges were more common in the diatomaceous earth types, but these did not define efficacy on cuticle damage. The result showed that the Bb+DE treatment had greater damage, followed by the Bbl+DE treatment applied by aspersion. Higher mortality in G.mellonella was 70.1 % with Bb at 120h after sprinkled, while in P. brassicae, mortality reached 42.1 % with Bbl+DE; thus, it is important to highlight the importance of the inoculation method and larvae types used when effectiveness bio-trials were performed.
