Abstract: Candida infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. The increase in its incidence has been associated with resistance to antimicrobial therapy and biofilm formation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of tea tree oil (TTO) and its main component -terpinen-4-olagainst resistant Candida albicans strains (genotypes A and B) identified by molecular typing and against C. albicans ATCC 90028 and SC 5314 reference strains in planktonic and biofilm cultures… Show more

“…Although there are no reports of O-EO affecting adhesion in C. albicans , it has been described that 4-terpineol and thymol have anti-adhesion effects [ 45 , 50 ]. In addition, 4-terpineol can inhibit the viability and structural arrangement of C. albicans biofilms [ 51 , 52 ]. Thymol has shown similar effects against C. albicans and C. tropicalis biofilms, affecting both viability and membrane integrity [ 53 , 54 ].…”

“…13 The confocal image also shows the presence of antifungal activity of tea tree oil where a red color is seen which indicates microbial death. 14 Three of the eight journals that observed their zone of inhibition stated that there was anti-fungal activity of tea tree oil with different areas depending on the concentration of tea tree oil given. 12,15,16 The journal that discusses the antiparasitic activity of tea tree oil against S.scabiei states that its effectiveness is seen from the survival time of S.scabiei.…”
