A national study on the use of opioid analgesics in dentistry

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of opioid analgesics prescribed by Brazilian dentists, potential regional differences and their association with socioeconomic and health-related factors. “…These different findings may be explained by the characteristics and comprehensiveness of public health care systems in both countries, kinds of medicines subsidized by governments (either free of charge or under copayment) and the variety of chemical substances included in each country's list of essential medicines, and national prescribing guidelines and oral health conditions in Brazil. In a previous study, 11 DDD of opioids per 1,000 inhab. per year in the state of Minas Gerais was higher than our findings.…”

“…Chi square test; p value:0.045 <0.05; Statistically significant (Figure 16). A study conducted by lino et al shows that the most commonly used opioid was codeine in combination with paracetamol and one in 1000 patients were prescribed opioids which were positively associated with dentists and inversely associated with socio economic status of the patients (Lino et al, 2019). The prescription of opioid analgesics was 50.3% for NTDC and 14.8% for non-NTDC visits.…”

“…Opioid use has risen in dental practice over the last few decades. Nonetheless, when drug treatment is required, opioid analgesics are not typically the irst option, but should be seen as an alternative in particular cases (Lino et al, 2019). Those involve cases where acetaminophen or a nonsteroidal anti-in lammatory drug (NSAID) is contraindicated.…”
