The need for endodontic treatment and systemic characteristics of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the epidemiological and clinical profiles of patients before and after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and the need for endodontic treatment. The subjects included 188 individuals enrolled in the dental care program for transplanted patients of the School of Dentistry, Federal University of Minas Gerais (Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, FO-UFMG) from March 2011 through March 2016. “…However, the change was not significant. These findings are supported by a clinical study that reported an increased level of hemoglobin, platelet, and neutrophils in HSCT recipients after the BMT [20]. Another clinical study reported a fast recovery of platelet count and TLC post-HSCT compared to ANC after HSCT in cancer patients [21].…”

“…Furthermore, two-dimensional imaging (PAN and periapical radiography) is commonly accepted as a method for the diagnosis of AP, while three-dimensional imaging (conebeam computed tomographic (CBCT)) represents a second evaluation step in some cases (26,27). Due to the immunosuppression status of these patients (28), inclusion and exclusion criteria were strictly applied and patients with other malign or hematological diseases were excluded, in order to reduce the effect of covariables. However, the lack of other studies evaluating the presence of AP lesions and endodontic treatments in MM patients must be regarded as the main limitation of this work.…”

“…Studies that have evaluated the need for endodontic treatment in different communities have found values that are much less expressive than those observed here. These values were 14%, 10.2%, and 23.2% in HIV-positive patients, 4 in patients with sickle cell disease, 5 and in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation, 6 respectively. In this study, the Sateré-Mawé ethnic group presented a higher prevalence of endodontic treatment compared to the Tikuna ethnic group, which can be explained by the great difficulty of access to dental health services and the absence of educational and preventive actions to promote oral health.…”
