Aim: to evaluate canal cleanliness after using manual dynamic activation, passive ultrasonic irrigation and photoactivated disinfection in comparison with conventional needle irrigation, using scanning electron microscopy Methods: Sixty single rooted human premolars with nearly straight single canal were collected, the crowns of all teeth were removed near the level of cementoenamel junction to obtain approximately 15 ±1 mm uniform root lengths. After instrumentaion with ProTaper Next files up to X4 (40/06), roots were randomly divided into 4 equal groups (n=15) according to the method of final irrigation activation. Group I: Conventional needle and syringe irrigation. Group II: Manual dynamic activation. Group III: passive ultrasonic irrigation. Group IV: photoactivated disinfection. Canal cleanliness was evaluated with SEM using different magnification (X350-X1000).Results: Group III had the best cleanliness of the root canal while Group I had the worst cleanliness, there were statistical significant differences between Group I versus Groups II and III and between Group III and Group IV (P ≤ 0.05). Regardless the irrigation activation method, the coronal level showed significantly less amount of smear layer and remaining debris than the apical level.Conclusions: None of the tested final irrigation activation methods resulted in completely clean canal wall.

Introduction: Postoperative endodontic pain is common. 3 to 58% of patients had post-op pain. Canal microbes are tough to eliminate. No irrigant meets all the perfect irrigant characteristics. Methods: In Kanpur, India, 46 participants were enrolled in this randomised clinical trial from January to June 2022. Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics conducted the study. Local anaesthetic (1:2,000 lignocaine with adrenaline) was followed by rubber dam isolation and access cavity preparation. Teeth were cleaned and shaped. Patients were divided into two groups using a coin flip. Group A employed a 2 W 810 nm diode laser for laser disinfection. In Group B, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was ultrasonically agitated. After a final treatment with saline, composite resin was used for obturation and post-endodontic restoration. A blinded assessor rated post-endodontic treatment after 6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 7 days. SPSS 20.0 was used to gather and analyse the data after utilising Pearson's Chi-square test with 5% significance. Results: 25 men and 19 women among 44 patients. 10 patients were 40-60, 28 were 30-40, and 12 were 18-29. No statistically significant difference was seen between PUI and laser disinfection in single visit root canal therapy (p=0.086).

Introdução: A terapia fotodinâmica associada a laser tem sido estudada e aplicada em diversas especialidades da Odontologia objetivando o uso de técnicas menos invasivas. Objetivo: Este estudo tem como objetivo apresentar aos cirurgiões-dentistas e à sociedade a nova face da Odontologia voltada à utilização da terapia fotodinâmica associada a laser na prática endodôntica, bem como, apresentar os aspectos gerais da laserterapia. Material e Metódos: Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura, caracterizada como descritiva e exploratória. Foram realizadas buscas em livros, artigos científicos, monografias, dissertações e teses, no período de agosto de 2018 a maio de 2019. Esses dados foram obtidos por meio de bases de dados MedLine, PubMed, Scielo, LILACS e BBO. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que a terapia fotodinâmica associada a laser é efetiva como coadjuvante ao tratamento endodôntico convencional, sendo uma das principais utilizações auxiliar na desinfecção dos canais radiculares, que consiste em utilizar uma fonte de luz com comprimento de onda específico capaz de estimular um agente fotossensível , que resulta em danos oxidativos, causando a morte celular. São observados também estudos do seu desempenho no preparo cavitário, controle da vitalidade pulpar, capeamento pulpar e pulpotomia, limpeza dos condutos radiculares, obturação e adesão dos cimentos endodônticos, retratamento, cirurgias periapicais, redução da dor e reparação pós-operatória. Conclusão: Concluiu-se que a terapia fotodinâmica utilizada como coadjuvante à terapia endodôntica convencional aumenta a previsibilidade de sucesso do tratamento, desde que, o conhecimento sobre os fundamentos e interações com os tecidos biológicos sejam esclarecidos e dominados pelo profissional.
