Effectiveness of acupuncture, ozonio therapy and low-intensity laser in the treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction of muscle origin: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Introduction One of the most common causes of orofacial pain is temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Objective The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of acupuncture, ozone therapy and laser therapy in the treatment of muscle TMD patients through a randomized controlled trial. Material and method Twelve professors and postgraduate students from the University of Passo Fundo, diagnosed with TMD, aged between 23 and 50 years old, of both sexes, were evaluated. Individuals were randomly divided into… Show more

“…The biostimulation, analgesic effects without thermal changes, and increased pain threshold due to changes in cell membrane structure, vasodilatation, decrease in oedema, increase in metabolism of cellular activities and wound‐healing time are all factors that contribute to laser's effectiveness 71 . In agreement with our results, some authors reported efficacy of LLLT in increasing range of motion and reducing pain 11,24,30‐36 …”

“…Although a number of studies have evaluated the effectiveness of SST 24‐29 therapy or LLLT 24,30‐35 for patients with TMD, there is no studies have targeted application of LLLT either alone or combined with SST in management of DDwoR CCL cases. The research questions were “Is LLLT effective in patients with chronic closed lock of TMJ DDwoR?”, ‘if LLLT was combined to MSST, would it accelerate the length of time to reach a pain‐free range of motion compared to MSST alone?’.…”
