Mulch with sugarcane bagasse and bamboo straw attenuates salt stress in cowpea cultivation

Abstract: HIGHLIGHTS Saline stress did not affect the initial growth of the cowpea crop. The use of mulch provides better morphological results in the cowpea crop. Vegetal mulches as soil protection (sugarcane bagasse and bamboo straw) attenuated effect of salts on gas exchange of cowpea.

“…By suppressing evaporation, the enhanced soil moisture under SHS mulches likely played a key role in attenuating the effects of salt stress by transporting salts away from the root region via percolation/capillarity, as evidenced by the 39–60% lower sodium concentration in the topsoil ( p < 0.05, Table S2). Similar effects of mulches in attenuating salt stress have been reported in other studies. However, it should be noted that repeated brackish water irrigation would add to cumulative levels of soil salinity.…”

“…Lessa et al (2019), evaluating the use of plant mulch in sorghum plants irrigated with saline waters, also found a positive effect of this practice. Similarly, Barbosa et al (2021) also found that the use of mulch minimized the impact of salts on leaf growth and gas exchange, especially in cowpea plants.…”
