“…The SQI was devised following the method described by Andrews et al (2004), which has been used by several authors for different types of soil analyses (Cherubin, Tormena, & Karlen, 2017). It uses principal component analysis (PCA) to determine the most appropriate variables to be included in the SQI.…”

“…The SQI we propose here is based on results obtained for natural Mediterranean forest soils in the Cuenca mountain range (Spain) and was obtained by applying the same PCA methodology used in other studies in non-agricultural soils in Spain (Bastida et al, 2006;Zornoza et al, 2007), China (Pang, Bao, & Zhang, 2006) and the USA (Cherubin et al, 2017). We developed this SQI using results from soils taken from undisturbed areas with different characteristics, and then applied and calibrated the index in areas with disturbed soils situated in the same forests of the Cuenca mountain range (Zornoza et al, 2008).…”

“…According to SMAF guidelines, five indicators are the minimum required to SQ assessment through this tool, with at least an indicator representing soil biological, chemical and physical attributes (Karlen et al, 2008). The importance of each selected indicator was widely discussed by Cherubin et al (2016cCherubin et al ( , 2017;…”

“…In contrast, sugarcane straw removal may have negative implications on many soil ecosystem services Carvalho et al, 2016;Cherubin et al, 2017). Several studies have shown the benefits of straw retention including: carbon accumulation , nutrient cycling , water storage and infiltration (Cheong and Teeluck, 2016;, protection against soil erosion and biological activity .…”

“…In this sense, The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) is a usefull tool to acess Soil Quality (SQ) that has been well accepted by the scientific community in the last years (Bünemann et al, 2018;Cherubin et al, 2017;Lisboa et al, 2019). It gives a score from zero to one, to each biological, physical and chemical factor and allows calculating an integrated score considering all parameters (Andrews et al, 2004;Bünemann et al, 2018;Lisboa et al, 2019).…”
