Effectiveness of Current Fertilizer Recommendations for Irrigated Rice in Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems

Abstract: Irrigated rice in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) has shown significant growth in yield in recent years due to improved management practices, especially in regard to fertilizer use. However, the response curves that led to the current fertilizer recommendations do not consider integrated systems prevailing in rice-producing regions that have adopted the practice of integrated crop-livestock systems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of current fertilizer recommendations for… Show more

“…Increased nutrient cycling and improved soil quality may reflect conditions more conducive to plant development (de Faccio Carvalho et al, 2010). In a study carried out on four different sites under ICLS in southern Brazil, yields of irrigated rice were increased and the response to fertilization decreased with the increase in the period of adoption of integrated systems between rice and beef cattle (Carmona et al, 2016).…”

“…The results of this article demonstrate the importance of the adoption of integrated systems in the lowland subtropical environments of southern Brazil, which present in some situations recurrent problems due to high specialization of irrigated rice cultivation. Rice monoculture areas with lack of crop rotation and fallow in the fall/ winter period converge to reduce soil fertility levels and require high inputs of mineral fertilizers to obtain satisfactory yields of irrigated rice (Carmona et al, 2016).…”

“…Carmona, Anghinoni, Mezzari, Martins, and Carvalho (2016) found increases in yield and decreased rice response to fertilization under an integrated crop–livestock system (ICLS). The ICLS is based on rotation between grain crop under no‐tillage and livestock under pasture cultivation (Carvalho et al., 2014).…”

“…Farmers in south-Brazilian lowlands have encountered difficulties with the irrigated rice production system, like for instance yield limitations and high costs associated to poor soil fertility Carmona et al, 2016) and herbicide resistant weeds , which are spread out in many fields. Crop diversification is one of the keys to overcome such technical difficulties.…”
