Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation on ischemic rest pain in inpatients: randomised trial

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To investigate the efficacy of a short-term application of Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation to relieve rest pain in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia. METHODS:In patients ³18 years old, with chronic limb-threatening ischemia and rest pain ³3 in the Visual Analogue Scale, without diabetic neuropathy were randomly assigned to 1) Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (100 Hz, 200 μs) or 2) sham intervention, both during one or two 20 min treatment sessions. The primary outcome… Show more

“…Less pain reduction in LBP treatmented by TENS may be due to peripheral nerve involvement other than C nerve fibers that amplify pain. Long-term stimulation of TENS can result in nerve fibers experiencing a refractory period [21,22].…”

“…For example, many patients with diabetes suffer from neuropathy or angiopathy in particular of the lower limbs or the diabetic foot syndrome. These conditions may potentially benefit from transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation 7 8 9 10 11 12 . In addition, many patients exhibit sensory impairments that promote the development of foot ulceration and negatively affect balance control and gait (Peters, 2016; Ziegler, 2022).…”
