Rational use of diagnostic tests for clinical decision making

Abstract: SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: To assist clinicians to make adequate interpretation of scientific evidence from studies that evaluate diagnostic tests in order to allow their rational use in clinical practice. METHODS: This is a narrative review focused on the main concepts, study designs, the adequate interpretation of the diagnostic accuracy data, and making inferences about the impact of diagnostic testing in clinical practice. RESULTS: Most of the literature that evaluates the performance of diagnostic tests uses c… Show more

“…The scientific literature presenting the sample size calculation for diagnostic studies is presented in the scientific literature [235238], but these approaches must be used with caution because the calculations are sensitive and the input data from one population are not a reliable solution for another population, so the input data for sample size calculation are recommended to come from a pilot study. This paper does not treat how to select a diagnostic test in clinical practice, the topic being treated by the evidence-based medicine and clinical decision [239241].…”

“…Reproducibility is another relevant parameter to estimate the concordance of measures of test and recommend its use. 15 The measurement properties of the pad test have been investigated, producing conflicting results. Studies show a low correlation between the urodynamic examination results and the 24-h pad test results.…”
