Background Recent data on the teaching of “spirituality and health” (S/H) in medical schools are needed. In this study, we aimed to investigate the current status of S/H teaching in Brazilian medical schools, the opinions of medical directors/deans on this topic and the factors associated with its incorporation into the curriculum. Methods A nationwide cross-sectional survey was carried out in 2021. Information concerning the S/H content in the curricula of medical schools was obtained through medical school representatives and other sources. Medical school representatives were asked about their opinions of and barriers to S/H teaching. Regression models were used to evaluate the factors associated with the incorporation of such content into the curriculum. Results Information on the incorporation of S/H content in medical curricula was retrieved from different sources for all 342 (100%) Brazilian medical schools. Among the representatives, 150 (43.9%) completed the online form. An increase in the S/H content in Brazilian medical schools was observed (from 40% to 2011 to 65.5% in 2021). Most medical school representatives agreed that this issue is important in medical training and that more space in the curriculum is needed. However, they also observed several barriers, such as a lack of knowledge of medical teachers/faculty, a lack of time, and the topic not being included in teaching plans. The most important factors that influenced the incorporation of S/H teaching in medical schools and representatives’ opinions were a lack of time and knowledge, professor preparedness and standardized national competency requirements. Conclusion These results could help medical educators rethink the incorporation of S/H content into their curricula.

Este trabalho tem o objetivo de relatar a experiência de acadêmicos de Odontologia nas atividades desenvolvidas pela Liga Acadêmica de Cariologia (LAC) da Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC) nos anos de 2021 e 2022. A LAC teve início em maio de 2021 em formato online, via Google Meet, em virtude da pandemia de COVID-19. Os encontros foram realizados semanalmente, contemplando atividades de ensino, extensão e pesquisa. Nas atividades de ensino foram discutidos capítulos de livros, artigos científicos e casos clínicos relacionados à cárie dentária e outras desordens dos tecidos mineralizados dos dentes, como erosão e outras lesões não cariosas. Como extensão, foram desenvolvidas ações com orientações de saúde bucal para crianças e adolescentes, buscando sempre a prevenção. Também foram realizadas palestras abertas ao público, sobre temas relacionados à Cariologia, e criada uma conta no instagram “@ligacariologiaunisc”, que publica conteúdos educativos, embasados nas leituras realizadas nas atividades da LAC. Na pesquisa, os acadêmicos envolvidos buscaram evidências científicas em relação aos temas abordados. Os acadêmicos também foram estimulados a participar de eventos científicos, apresentando trabalhos. Dessa forma, considera-se que a atuação dos acadêmicos em diferentes cenários, a partir de um aprofundamento teórico, contribui para a formação acadêmica mais próxima da realidade do mundo do trabalho. Além disso, ao integrar os eixos ensino, pesquisa e extensão, as atividades realizadas pela LAC agregaram conhecimento para outros professores, estudantes e cirurgiões-dentistas interessados na área de Cariologia, e beneficiaram a comunidade contemplada com as ações de extensão.

Introduction: One of the great challenges of a medical school curriculum is to offer training in basic surgical techniques, which allows graduates to develop competences to take care of simple cases presented in the primary care level of SUS. In order to approach the problem of the technical-surgical qualification of medical students and taking advantage of the interest raised by students’ leagues, a surgical care project directed at patients with inguinal hernia was proposed and carried out, based on the students’ academic leagues. The aim of this study is to disclose and discuss the results and the academic experience learned from a students’ league in surgical learning. Methods: This report encompasses the three-year experience of an academic league aiming to approach the problem of the technical-surgical qualification of medical students and which takes advantage of the academic leagues among undergraduate medical students. The participants comprised one general surgery professor, one anesthesiologist, and undergraduate medical students interested in the surgical clinic, from the School of Medicine, University of Pernambuco, Recife (PE), Brazil. Results: Twenty-four students were included. Ninety-six patients were submitted to surgery. Two seminars with nine lectures and one workshop on surgical skills were held. One paper entitled “League of Inguinal Hernia Surgery” was presented. We did not observe hernia recurrences; the surgical complications were minimum and small in number. The students showed fast development of surgical, interpersonal, and communication skills. However, this education model included a small number of students and offered heavy competition to the general surgery residents in their first year at the University Hospital. Conclusion: The academic league in surgery allows a rich pedagogical experience, offering the opportunity for human and technical qualification. However, the proposed model has limitations. In our opinion, it does not represent a solution for the flaws and omissions observed in the school’s curricular grid.
