Can various complete blood count parameters helpful in preoperative diagnosis of adnexal torsion?

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Adnexal torsion is an important gynecological emergency due to nonfrequent but possible adverse reproductive outcomes. There is no specific laboratory marker to support the preoperative diagnosis or that can be used clinically. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic values of platelet, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and red cell markers as an early indicator of ovarian torsion.METHODS: This retrospective study included 28 female patients who were treated surgically for adnexal torsion betwe… Show more

“…AT is an emergent gynecological phenomenon which, without early intervention and an accurate diagnosis, could result in ovarian loss, infertility, and death. It is defined as the partial or complete twisting of the suspensory ligament that supports the blood supply to the ovary [ 3 ]. The nonspecific symptoms of AT, such as vomiting, nausea, and low-grade fever, often complicates its diagnosis.…”

“…In this study, NLR was determined to be a useful indicator for the diagnosis of ovarian torsion and suitable for clinical application. Ovarian torsion can lead to serious consequences if correct diagnosis and treatment are not performed (8). The utero-ovarian ligament, broad ligament, and infundibulopelvic ligament are among the supporting ligaments of the ovary.…”

“…Some authors suggest that various laboratory parameters may be helpful in the preoperative diagnosis of adnexal torsion, specifically increased CRP level, white blood cell count, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (20)(21)(22)(23)(24). These parameters are important inflammatory markers of ischemia that, together with the corresponding clinical characteristics, may serve as predictive factors for tissue necrosis in cases of adnexal torsion and shorten the time to surgical intervention.…”
