Effect of Moringa Oleifera Leaf Powder Supplementation on Pectoral Muscle Quality and Morphometric Characteristics of Tibia Bone in Broiler Chickens

Abstract: Although in-feed antibiotics work for broiler chicken´s growth, they are a source of public health hazard. Therefore, there is a need for alternates which can act as growth promoter without deleterious effects on the health of meat consumers. Moringa oleifera is one such phytobiotic which is reported to possess antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. This study investigated the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MOLP) supplementation on meat quality and bone morphometry of broiler. One-day-old chic… Show more

“…This study noticed that supplementation of leaf powder at 12 g/kg level could increase pH, water holding capacity, and muscle fiber diameter in the breast muscle of experimental broilers. In addition, higher weight, ash percentage, and the density of tibia bone in broilers fed with moringa leaf meal were also recorded in their studies [81]. In this study, authors hypothesized that higher muscle pH values in experimental groups were due to the stabilization of the myofibrils by activating antioxidant properties and preventing free radicals.…”

“…Meat pH, tenderness, color (lightness, redness, and yellowness),and water holding capacity are very important meat quality characteristics to the consumers. An experiment on supplementation of Moringa oleifera leaf powder on the quality of meat and bone in broilers was conducted by Rehman et al [81]. This study noticed that supplementation of leaf powder at 12 g/kg level could increase pH, water holding capacity, and muscle fiber diameter in the breast muscle of experimental broilers.…”

“…Moreover, M. oleifera leaf meal seemed also to contribute to the increased protein content in breast meat in this current study. Formerly, Rehman et al (2018) suggested that feeding M. oleifera leaf powder elevated the tissue protein deposition as reflected by the increase in muscle fibre diameter of broiler chickens. Interesting result was seen in this current work, in which dietary inclusion of FCPMO resulted in lower (P<0.05) fat content in the breast meat of broilers.…”

“…At the age of 56 days, two birds from each replicate were slaughtered. The drumstick portion from hip joint to hock joint was separated without damage to the tibia bone (Rehman et al, 2018). The flesh from the bone was separated by boiling in tap water (100 °C) for 20 minutes and removed manually to keep the bone intact.…”
