In-Vitro Antibacterial and Antifungal Effects of High Levels of Chinese Star Anise

Abstract: This study investigated the in-vitro antibacterial and fungicidal activities of three crude extracts of Illicium verum (absolute methanol, 50% methanol and aqueous extracts) against two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes), two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella Arizona), and two fungi (Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger). The antibacterial action was measured using an agar disk diffusion test, and the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) a… Show more

“…Although the content of trans-Anethole in the present study was recorded with a low content comparing to numerous studies [8,9,28], there are still investigations were reported trans-Anethole by a ratio less than 90 % of the volatile oil of the SAF [14,22,29]. The present results of volatile oil recorded valuable quantities of Estragole, Foeniculin, α-Pinene, and Linalool fractions.…”

“…At this concentration, the strain F. culmorum KF191 loses its ability growth on the media. In the same regard, numerous studies were referred to the antifungal impact of the SAF extracts, particularly the toxigenic fungi [ 8 , 9 , 28 , 38 ].…”

“…Moreover, MIC and MBC of RNL extracts ranged from 0.20 to 13.02 for Gram-negative bacteria and from 0.32 to 31.26 mg/mL for Gram-positive bacteria. In contrast, Alhajj et al [33] reported that MIC and MBC values ranged from 7.8 to 31.2 mg/mL for both types of bacteria.…”

“…3). Following Alhajj et al [33], the sterile dried disks were aseptically applied to the inoculated agar plates after being soaked in 40 µL of the respective RNL extract. The plates were left at 4°C for 1 h before incubation at 37°C for 24 h. The diameter of the inhibition zones (DIZ) was then measured (in mm).…”

“…Okamoto et al (2002), Tisserand andYoung (2014), andKosalec et al (2005) added that oxidized anethole will form anisketone which also acts as antimicrobial agent. In the recent study of Alhajj et al (2019) showed that star anise alcoholic extract have antibacterial and antifungal activities and could be used as natural antimicrobial agent. The stability of star anise volatile essential oil and its antibacterial activity can be significantly enhanced by using HPCD encapsulation (Zhang et al 2018).…”
