The Antifungal Properties of Peppermint and Thyme Essential Oils Misted in Broiler Houses

Abstract: This study aimed at evaluating if essential oils misted in broiler houses reduce environmental fungi counts. The investigation was conducted in three experimental rooms, where broiler chickens were reared between 1 to 42 d of age. Every three days, the rooms were fogged with pure water (control) or with aqueous solutions of peppermint or thyme oils. On the next day, fogging samples from the air, flat surfaces, and litter were collected and quantitatively and qualitatively analysed for fungal contamination. The… Show more

“…Our results demonstrate that the use of EO mist does not adversely affect broiler growth performance, and that PO mist can increase BW and WG in broiler chickens. The reason for greater WG in group PO could be a higher level of environmental cleanliness and, in consequence, lower susceptibility to infections because PO exerts bactericidal effects on environmental microorganisms (Witkowska & Sowińska, 2013;Witkowska et al, 2016). Due to its potent antioxidant properties, PO helps maintain the structural integrity of immune system cells and protects cell membranes against free radical-induced oxidation, thus enhancing the immune response (Arab-Ameri et al, 2016;Awaad et al, 2016).…”

“…Essential oils can also affect mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) responsible for immunostimulation, which indirectly improves performance and the health status of broiler chickens. The antimicrobial properties of EO mist improve hygiene standards (Bakutis et al, 2011;Witkowska & Sowińska, 2013;Witkowska et al, 2016) and contribute to higher performance. The aroma of selected EO mist could also influence chicken behaviour and feed intake.…”

“…According to a limited number of studies, selected EOs can be effectively used to sanitize and improve the quality of air in poultry houses. Witkowska and Sowińska [21] and Witkowska et al [71] demonstrated that fumigation of broiler houses with EOs can improve hygiene standards in poultry farms. In the cited experiments, aqueous solutions of EOs were sprayed in broiler houses.…”

“…Arné and colleagues argued that since there are no treatments for infected poultry, and therefore, the only effective way to protect chickens against mycoses is prevention [6]. Some of the known methods used to reduce dust and fungal spores in the air of poultry buildings are misting with water and/or aqueous solutions of essential oils (peppermint, thyme, pine and eucalyptus oils) [7] The use of biological compounds extracted from medicinal plants may offer an alternative to conventionally used disinfectants to control airborne fungi.…”
