Development of a Heavy Containment Level Bridge Rail for Istanbul

Abstract: The international highways within the city limits of Istanbul are used to transit more than 15 million trucks and other heavy good vehicles per year. According to the statistics, the number of single truck run of the road accidents is in the rise. Recent accidents on bridges showed that currently used bridge rails specified by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) lack the required design criteria to safely contain and redirect heavy vehicles. The objective of this study is therefore design, analyze and tes… Show more

“…The plate ( 7) is fixed on the ground surface by the four screws, generically called connection parts (4). The plate welds the lower side of the supporting U-post, the plate welds the gusset (8) Considering the guardrail system is mounted on a bridge, the distance between the supporting posts is 1.5 m, and the total length is 18 m.…”

“…The design of these types of guardrails involves minimum lateral deformations and bringing the vehicle back on the road with minimal damage. A comparative crash impact study is performed in the real environment and simulated in Ls-Dyna, respecting the impact 1220 (2022) 012049 IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1757-899X/1220/1/012049 2 conditions described according to the TB11 for impact with a vehicle with a 900 kg mass and TB31 on impact with an articulated HGV with a mass of 37390 kg [4].…”

“…Wilde et al 7 in their study, it was determined that the transition regions of steel guardrails to different levels are the most critical regions in terms of ASI-THIV values, in their analysis with the help of finite elements (FE). Atahan 8 in his study aiming to improve the ASI value for bridges and viaducts in Istanbul of the newly developed YIM04 heavy bridge guardrail system; TB11 and TB81 full capacity real crash test and FE simulations of the designed system were carried out within the scope of EN 1317, and numerical and experimental results were compared. The ASI value obtained in the TB11 tests was measured as 1.2 (class B), and it was stated that this value was acceptable for bridge guardrails.…”
