1D analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates using a new fifth-order plate theory

Abstract: In the present study, a new fifth-order shear and normal deformation theory FOSNDT is developed for the analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates under cylindrical bending. The theory considered the effects of transverse shear and normal deformations. To account for the effect of transverse shear deformation, in-plane displacement uses polynomial shape function expanded up to fifth-order in-terms of the thickness coordinate. Transverse displacement uses derivative of shape function to account for the… Show more

“…A fifth-order shear and normal deformation theory is initially developed by authors for the cylindrical bending i.e. 1D analysis of laminated composite plates (Naik and Sayyad 2018). In this study, it is extended for the bi-directional bending analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates.…”

“…36 compared the performance of various available HOSDTs based on polynomial expansions using Carrera’s unified formulation (CUF) for analysis of sandwich beams. Recently, Naik and Sayyad 37 and Sayyad and Naik 38 proposed a fifth-order HOSDT-based model for the analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates. HOSDT gives the continuous variation of the transverse shear strain across the thickness but shows a discontinuity in the shear stress distribution at interfaces due to different values of shear rigidity at the adjacent layers.…”
