Persistent interstitial lung abnormalities in post-COVID-19 patients: a case series

Abstract: A new concept of multisystem disease has emerged as a long-term condition following mild-severe COVID-19 infection. The main symptoms of this affection are breathlessness, chest pain, and fatigue. We present here the clinical case of four COVID-19 patients during hospitalization and 60 days after hospital discharge. Physiological impairment of all patients was assessed by spirometry, dyspnea score, arterial blood gas, and 6-minute walk test 60 days after hospital discharge, and computed tomographic scan 90 day… Show more

“…A total of 70 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis (figure 1). Among the manuscripts included, 60 reported infections by SARS-CoV-24 24–83; 18 by SARS-CoV13 14 84–100; 1 by MERS-CoV101; 16 by Influenza (11 subtype H1N1, 1 subtype H5N1, 1 subtype H3N2, 2 subtype H7N9 and 1 study both H1N1 and H7N9) 102–117. All studies were observational in design, with the exception of a single randomised control trial 97.…”

“…3 Acute pulmonary complications of this respiratory virus include viral pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary embolism whereas long term complications include but not limited to persistent interstitial abnormalities, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis. [4][5][6][7][8] Follow-up data from other studies report persistent physiological and parenchymal abnormalities, especially in hospitalized patients with severe initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. [9][10][11] However, there are only limited number of studies reporting evidence of functional small airway disease (fSAD) after SARS-CoV-2 infection.…”
