A Bibliometric Analysis of Articles Published in Brazilian Dental Journal over 30 years

This study assessed bibliometric characteristics of all articles published in Brazilian Dental Journal (BDJ) in its 30 years of existence (1990-2019) and factors associated with citation rates. A document search was carried out in Scopus in December, 2019 and information about the articles were exported, including citations. Type of study and main subject in each article were categorized. Number of citations was categorized in tertiles. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between variables related to articles’ characteristics and number of citations. In 30 years, 1705 articles were published and 18507 citations received, with average 57 articles and 334 pages published yearly and 10.9 cites/doc. The most frequent types of study were laboratorial (63%), clinical (18.5%), and case reports (11%); the main subjects were dental materials (21.6%), endodontics (19.3%), and oral pathology/stomatology (13.1%). Most articles had origin in Brazil (90%), followed by USA (4.6%) and UK (1.5%). Aside from BDJ, Journal of Endodontics (3.5%) and International Endodontic Journal (2.2%) were journals that most often cited BDJ. Main origins of citations were Brazil (36.7%), USA (10.6%), and India (9%). Older articles had higher odds to be highly cited (12% increase/year), longer articles had lower odds (9% decrease/page). Narrative reviews and epidemiological studies were associated with more citations and systematic reviews with less citations. In conclusion, BDJ covered many subjects and study types in 30 years, showing increased growth in international audience. The journal may be regarded as one of the leading Brazilian journals in dentistry published in English.

Technological innovation and the development of new products is what currently boost the competitiveness between enterprises and moves the economy. The technical-scientific advances inDentistry grow each day and there are great investments by research centers and universities in new materials, especially in dental implantology. The objective was to evaluate the patents deposited and granted in implantology at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in Brazil. This is a prospective study with searches performed during March 2020 on patents in dental implantology deposited and granted in the INPI. The research was carried out in titles and abstracts of reports on patent applications from the first deposit through to the most current using the search terms "dental implants" and "implantology". The information was extracted from documents and organized into tables and graphs. From 1988, the date of the first deposit, through to 2019 there were 139 patent application deposits. Among the deposited patents, 54% (75) were classified as utility model patents and 25% (35) as invention patents, the others 21% (29) have been in analysis. Brazil holds 80.6% (112) of deposits, and the others are from countries in Latin America, North America, Europe and Africa, and virtually all patents are of type A, which refers to products of human needs. Most deposits of patents for use in implantology in the INPI relate to implant and prosthetic component accessories, indicating greater investment by industry in Brazil in this sector. However, in 30 years there were only 134 deposited patents, suggesting that the importation of products in the area is still great, which consequently makes the products of this area more expensive. Thus, investments in patents play an important role in technological and economic development of a country.

A produção científica brasileira em odontologia tem ganhado notoriedade nos últimos anos com o aumento dos canais científicos prestigiados pela comunidade acadêmica. Diante desse cenário, esta pesquisa objetivou analisar a produção científica da área de odontologia de autores afiliados ao Brasil com dados levantados de duas principais bases de dados multidisciplinares do meio científico, a Web of Science e a Scopus, no período de 2010 a 2020, através do auxílio da ferramenta Bibliometrix. Desse modo, foi possível realizar várias análises bibliométricas, como os autores e os periódicos que mais publicaram na área, seus índices h e g e as colaborações entre países e instituições. Observou-se neste estudo: a predominância nas publicações com autoria múltipla; a maior quantidade de publicações em revistas brasileiras de acesso aberto; os Estados Unidos como o país que mais colaborou para as pesquisas na área; e a proeminência das três universidades estaduais paulistas no quesito quantidade de publicações.
