Effect of ultrasonic streaming on intra-dentinal disinfection and penetration of calcium hydroxide paste in endodontic treatment

Abstract: Objective The antimicrobial effect of ultrasonic agitation of calcium hydroxide (CH) pastes in infected bovine dentin and their penetrability were evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and microbiological culture.Material and Methods Fifty-two bovine teeth were infected with Enterococcus faecalis using a new contamination protocol; then they received CH paste and were divided into groups with or without ultrasound. Ultrasonic agitation was conducted for 1 min with a plain point insert. Afte… Show more

“…4 On the basis of the results of previous studies, the microbial communities in primary endodontic infections are more diverse than those in secondary endodontic infections. 5,6,7 Moreover, variation in the microorganisms isolated in several studies is likely a result of differences in the sampling techniques, laboratory procedures, and diagnostic approaches.…”

“…4 Understanding the microbiota composition in the infected root canal is essential for improving the treatment strategies to control infections and eliminate the pathogenic agents, as well as to prevent reinfection and periapical lesions. 9 The type and frequency of microbial agents involved in the genesis of endodontic diseases depend on several factors, such as geographic location, socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and oral hygiene status.…”

“…To analyse the dentinal tubules 8 sequential images were obtained in the cervical and middle thirds of each dentine cylinder; thus, there were four images in the cervical third and four images in the middle third. In each third, two images were obtained near the canal (superficial area) and two images at a distance from the canal (deep area), totalling 64 confocal images per each group (Arias et al 2016) (Fig. 2).…”

“…Esses dados revelaram que a ativação ultrassônica da pasta de Ca(OH)2 promoveu uma maior redução do metabolismo bacteriano quando comparada à pasta não ativada. Esses dados estão de acordo com um estudo prévio in vitro que mostrou uma boa atividade da pasta de Ca(OH)2 ativada por ultrassom sobre infecção intra-tubular (Arias et al, 2016)…”
