Vascularization of the Alouatta belzebul brain base

Abstract: ABSTRACT: We studied the arterial circle in the brain of five specimens of the Alouatta belzebul primate. The material had the arterial system perfused (water at 40°C), injected with stained latex (Neoprene 650), fixed in aqueous formaldehyde solution (10%) and dissected for vessel verification. The arterial circle of this primate is composed of two vascular systems: the vertebra-basilar and the carotid ones, which anastomose to close the arterial circuit. In the caudal portion of the arterial circle, … Show more

“…Although the animals were from wildlife rescue and the initial conditions of preservation of the cadavers could influence the state of the encephalon, the glands, as well as the encephalic structures, were present in a good state of preservation in all the specimens analyzed. In other work with A. belzebul, specimens were used under the same conditions, kept frozen, and it was possible to conduct anatomical and histological studies (Sabec-Pereira et al, 2020a, 2020b, Pereira et al, 2020.…”

“…Regarding the nervous system of this species, the spinal cord, vascularization of the encephalon and venous sinuses of the dura mater have been described. However, the morphological aspects of the pineal gland have not been described (Souza-Terra et al, 2018;Sabec-Pereira et al, 2020a, 2020b. According to the Red List of Brazilian Fauna threatened with extinction classification updated in 2018, the species A. belzebul is categorized as vulnerable.…”

“…The morphological information about the base nuclei allows the understanding of motor behavior and ethological and behavioral aspects of different species, as well as supports the development of conservation strategies (7,9,10) . The species Alouatta belzebul was evaluated in other anatomical studies, such as the spinal cord (11) , vascularization of the brain (12) , digestive tract (13) , dura mater venous sinuses (14) and female reproductive system (15) , however, the islands of grey substance (cellular bodies) inside the white substance of the brain and of extreme importance for motor control called basal nuclei, were not studied in this species. The basal nuclei are composed of masses of gray substance (nuclei) located inside the medullary white center of the brain which is the white substance of the telencephalon.…”
