Acute phase proteins in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in healthy cattle: possible use for assessment of neurological diseases

Abstract: Use of acute-phase proteins (APPs) for assessment of health and disease in animals has increased greatly within the last decade. The objective was to determine the normal concentration of APPs in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of healthy cattle by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Fifty crossbred animals (350±70kg of BW and 18±1.2 months of age), 25 heifers and 25 steers were used. CSF samples were collected from atlanto-occipital (AO) site and blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein. CSF … Show more

“…This transcriptome alteration centers around the so-called acute-phase response to peripheral inflammation. CP is ideally situated, with the help of CSF which carries the secreted proteins 37 , to pass immunosignaling molecules into the ventricle-brain axis.…”

“…This anomaly reported in humans, has not been previously revealed in ruminants. Only the CSF in cattle (the cerebrospinal fluid) presented α1-antitripsin (Fagliari et al 2007;Sampaio et al 2015;Di Filippo 2018).…”

“…Extensive production of hepatic plasma proteins is a common systemic response in several diseases, and these proteins are collectively known as acute-phase proteins (APPs) (Lee et al, 2015). In an earlier report, the estimation of APPs in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), particularly amyloid A and haptoglobin, has been used as a diagnostic tool in several neurological disorders (Filippo et al, 2018;Nirala et al, 2020). However, its efficacy in the diagnosis of listeriosis has not been confirmed.…”
