Abstract: ABSTRACT. Checklist of Scarabaeinae (Coeloptera: Scarabaeidae) from Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. In this study we present an updated checklist of species of dung beetles of the subfamily Scarabaeinae, occurrying in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. One hundred and eighteen species are reported and associated with ecosystems or antropized habitat within the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.KEYWORDS. Dung beetles, Pantanal, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Biota/MS Program.RESUMO. Apresenta-se nesse estudo uma lista at… Show more

“…Regardless of the distance between sampling areas (150 km), the same species dominated each habitat: Canthon quinquemaculatus in forests (either with or without cattle) and Deltochilum elongatum in open pastures. Both species are native to the Chaco region (Medina et al ., ; Damborsky et al ., ; Vaz‐de‐Mello et al ., ). Both species are mainly necrophagous (da Silva et al ., ; Ibarra‐Polesel et al ., ); however, the most abundant feeding resource in livestock areas is cattle dung; we expected coprophagous species to be dominant.…”

“…Canthon curvodilatatus was dominant in unburned and burned sites, demonstrating that this species is unaffected by the effects of fire in the Brazilian Pantanal. This species is frequently found in natural grasslands (Correa et al, 2022), with wide distribution in the Brazilian Pantanal (Vaz‐de‐Mello et al, 2017). Furthermore, C. curvodilatatus is benefited by cattle presence (Correa et al, 2020; Correa, Braga, Louzada, & Menéndez, 2019); since that grasslands studied are used for cattle ranching, this fact may help to explain its dominance in the region.…”

“…Of the three species considered indicators of burned sites, two were identified to species‐specific level: Canthon daguerrei and Canthon histrio . Both species are known to occur in pasturelands, using mostly open areas including savanna, agricultural land and tall reed grass (Tissiani et al, 2017; Vaz‐de‐Mello et al, 2014, 2017). Thus, burned sites can offer advantages to opportunistic species and species more tolerant to the changes in the environmental dynamics (Pausas & Parr, 2018), such as C. daguerrei and C. histrio , that result in an increase of their populations.…”

“…These studies throughout the world reveal a diversity of approximately 7000 species of the subfamily Scarabaeinae (Lima et al, 2015). In Brazil, 700 species are currently recognized with 323 endemic species, mainly in the Atlantic Forest (Vaz-de-Mello, 2000;Vaz-de-Mello et al, 2017;Silva et al, 2020). Of these, 81 species are known for the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, six of which are considered endemic to the state (Vaz-de-Mello, 2000).…”
