MiR-181b serves as diagnosis and prognosis biomarker in severe community-acquired pneumonia

Abstract: Severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP) is a common critical disease in the intensive care unit (ICU). This study aims to evaluate the clinical significance of miR-181b in SCAP, which has been revealed to be dysregulated in acute respiratory distress syndrome events due to SCAP. There were 50 SCAP patients and 26 healthy volunteers were recruited in this study. The expression of miR-181b was detected by RT-qPCR and the difference between SCAP and healthy controls was evaluated. The diagnosis and prognosis v… Show more

“…Our results demonstrated that both genes are strongly positively correlated to each other with r = 0.718 and p < 0.001 which enforces their synergistic effects, while, are negatively correlated to CRP, leucocytes count, and lymphocytic count which are inflammatory markers, and these negative correlations reflect the anti-inflammatory action of both genes mentioned in the previous paragraph. Our results were consistent with Yang et al, 2021, and Li et al, 2021 [ 10 , 28 ] who reported that miR-181b showed a significant negative association with the white blood cell count, absolute neutrophils, and the C-reactive protein of patients who suffered from inflammation with heart failure and from severe pneumonic patients respectively [ 10 , 28 ]. Also, Na et al, 2019 reported that miR-21 was negatively correlated with CRP in a patient with sepsis [ 6 ].…”

“…And subsequent analysis also verified the diagnostic accuracy of miR-181b and its predictive value for patients’ prognosis. 26 The results of a prospective study showed that high levels of circulating miR-146a-5p and miR-16-5p at admission were associated with lower mortality during follow-up in patients with CAP, suggesting that both miRNAs have the potential to be prognostic markers in patients with CAP. 27 In this study, ROC analysis investigated that miR-10a-3p had high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of severe pneumonia, and the enhancement of miR-10a-3p could distinguish patients from healthy people, which reflected the potential ability of miR-10a-3p as a diagnostic marker of severe pneumonia.…”
