Association of long non-coding RNA MIAT and MALAT1 expression profiles in peripheral blood of coronary artery disease patients with previous cardiac events

Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are implicated in various cellular and pathological processes. Two lncRNAs, myocardial infarction-associated transcript (MIAT) and metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1), may be involved in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Here, we aimed to determine the relative circulating levels of MIAT and MALAT1 in 110 stable CAD patients and 117 controls and to correlate their levels with the clinical and laboratory data. Peripheral blood expressio… Show more

“…Previous findings have shown that lncRNAs play an important role in regulating mammalian cardiogenesis (32). A study has revealed the association of MALAT1 expression profiles in peripheral blood of coronary artery disease patients with previous cardiac events (33). In this study, we demonstrated that lncRNA MALAT1 was highly expressed in HF patients and exhibited great value for HF diagnosis.…”

“…41 MIAT is particularly involved in diabetic retinopathy and numerous other microvascular problems. 42 A study by Toraih et al in 2019 43 revealed a significantly higher expression of circulating MIAT in patients with diabetes with coronary heart disease (CAD). Higher expression levels of MIAT and MALAT1 were related to hypertension and premature CAD, and both lncRNAs displayed greater relative expression in patients with a progressive history of prior cardiac ischaemic events.…”

“…MIAT dysregulation has been identified in a number of different diseases. For example, previous studies investigating coronary artery disease indicated that MIAT expression was significantly elevated in the serum of patients with coronary artery disease ( 16 , 17 ). Furthermore, MIAT upregulation has been reported in ischemic stroke ( 18 ).…”

“…Moreover, certain lncRNAs have been reported to be associated with oxidative stress during cataract ( 13-15 ). LncRNA myocardial infarction associated transcript (MIAT) aberrant expression has been identified in a number of diseases, including coronary artery disease ( 16 , 17 ), ischemic stroke ( 18 ) and ARC ( 19 ). However, the biological mechanism underlying MIAT during ARC is not completely understood.…”
