VDR polymorphisms influence immunological response in HIV-1+ individuals undergoing antiretroviral therapy

Abstract: Vitamin D exerts an immuno-modulatory activity on several immune system cells through the vitamin D receptor (VDR). Herein, we verified that age and a therapeutic regimen containing protease inhibitors are associated with failures in antiretroviral therapies (ARVs). In addition, we assessed whether a VDR SNP (rs11568820: C allele and CC genotype) and GC (rs2228570-rs11568820) allelic combinations are associated with immunological failure ( p < 0.05). Our findings s… Show more

“…VitD receptors (VDR) are known to be expressed on human T cells, and they play a role in T cell activation [40]. Heterogeneity in VitD responses may be due to VDR polymorphisms [41][42][43]. VitD therapy has been attempted for certain autoimmune diseases [44][45][46], based on results in animal models showing that VitD can PLOS ONE increase the ratio of Treg to Th17 cells [47,48].…”

“…exerts an immunomodulatory activity through the vitamin D receptor (VDR) by activating monocytes, stimulating cell-mediated immunity and suppressing lymphocyte proliferation, antibody production, and cytokine synthesis. VDR mediates genomic actions of 1,25 (OH)2D3, by acting as a transcription factor that modulates the expression of several1, 25 [16,17].…”
