Biomass production by Arthrospira platensis under different culture conditions

Abstract: In biotechnological processes, the culture media components are responsible for high costs and exert a strong influence on the cyanobacteria behavior. The objective of this study was to evaluate the Arthrospira platensis growth potential for biomass production under different cultivation conditions using an experimental design. Three factors that are important for cyanobacteria growth were evaluated: sodium bicarbonate (9 to 18 g/l), sodium nitrate (1.25 to 2.5 g/l), and irradiance (20 to 120 µmol photons/ m 2… Show more

“…This possibly occurred due to the large amount of nitrogen in the medium since some studies conducted by our research group (Castro et al, 2015) demonstrated that the concentration of sodium nitrate (nitrogen source) in the Zarrouk medium is very high. Colla et al (2007), showed that at a temperature close to that used in the present study (30°C), the absorption of nitrogen appears to be limited, once experiments with higher concentrations of sodium nitrate (1.875 and 2.500 g.L -1 ) showed no increase in the level of protein.…”

“…Furthermore, they modified Zarrouk's mediumas urea subsituation [42]. In several researches, nitrogen starvation increased the lipid fraction of some microalgaes such as S. platesis [43][44][45][46]. Rodrigues et al [35] concluded cyanobacteria initially used the nitrogen source of medium for the cells growth.…”

“…However, there are challenges in growing cyanobacteria. One of them is the high cost of culture medium (deCastro et al, 2015). Large amount of media is needed in extensive practical studies for cultivation, streak plate or pour plate and other experiments but low cost media is less available.…”
