Rice genotypes for drought tolerance: morphological and transcriptional evaluation of auxin-related genes

Abstract: Drought stress affects crop quality and productivity. The challenge of increasing food availability for a growing worldwide demand relies on the development of tolerant cultivars that will need to be adapted to arid and semi-arid areas. In order to help the understanding of rice response to stress, the phenotypic response of 6 Brazilian rice cultivars and 2 different crosses between them were characterized under drought conditions. Since gene regulation is an important part of root morphological responses to st… Show more

“…On another note, Mashkab proved to be tolerant in terms of leaf drying under the stress conditions, as it had only a 6.2% leaf drying percentage (Figure 1A). In general, the plants challenged with water deficit conditions showed reduced shoot growth and the number of roots [59]. Our results for the shoot reduction percentage suggested that the Yasmin cultivar was least affected whereas Furat the most, among the tested cultivars towards drought stress (Figure 2A).…”

“…The primers (Table 2) were synthesized for the auxin responsive gene OsIAA1 41 , cytokinin responsive gene RR2 42 , gibberellic acid responsive gene PBZ1 43 , ethylene responsive gene ERF063 44 and ABA responsive gene OsRab16 45 with the Primer quest tool, IDT (https://eu.idtdna.com/Primerquest/Home/Index).…”

“…Over expression of OsDREB1 or Arabidopsis DREB also improved drought and chilling tolerance in rice (Ito et al, 2006). Madabula et al, (2016) were evaluated 4 genes related to auxin response and root modifications (OsGNOM1/ CRL4, OsIAA1, OsCAND1 and OsRAA1). The expression of these genes were analyzed in stressed rice using public available microarray data and then through real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), in the 6 phenotypically evaluated Brazilian genotypes under standard conditions (absence of stress).Result showed that all genotypes lengthened its roots in response to drought, specially the 2 hybrids.…”
