The usefulness of GGE biplot methodology for line × tester data of maize inbred lines

Abstract: The genotype + genotype × environment (GGE) biplot methodology has the potential to determine combining ability effects, identify efficient testers, and distinct heterotic groups in a line × tester study. However, it has not been adequately applied for such analysis. Therefore, this study was done to assess the combining ability of some maize inbred lines and testers for grain yield, identify most efficient testers and classify inbred lines into heterotic groups using GGE biplot. Fifteen experimental single cr… Show more

“…The approach adopted is the estimation of combining ability effects and its visualization by using GGE biplot. Thus, GGE biplots can aid in the easy comprehension of complex data and understanding the heterotic pattern between testers and inbred lines (Badu‐Apraku & Akinwale, 2019; Bertoia et al., 2006; Darvishzadeh et al., 2009; Fotokian & Agahi, 2014; Kannababu et al., 2017; Momeni et al., 2020; Ruswandi et al., 2015; Vivek et al., 2009; Yan & Kang, 2002; Yan et al., 2001, 2007). The GGE biplot tools, namely, discriminativeness versus representativeness of testers and their ranking based on discriminativeness versus representativeness at different locations and across locations followed by plotting the heterotic pattern by using which‐won‐where biplot tools were employed to understand the interrelationship between inbred lines and testers and their alignment.…”

“…However, other testers, namely, HKI 193‐1, BML 6, HKI 1128, and UMI 1201, relatively differed in terms of ranking. Such comprehensive analysis of GGE biplots has not been done previously to identify the ideal tester (Badu‐Apraku & Akinwale, 2019; Bertoia et al., 2006; Momeni et al., 2020; Ruswandi et al., 2015).…”

“…However, this crop still has the required potential and capacity to respond to agronomy and breeding operations to increase yield. The superior genotype selection is based on the production ability and the scope of its yield stability in different weather conditions (Branković-Radojĉić et al 2018; Momeni et al 2020). Choosing a maize hybrid for cultivation is one of the most critical decisions a farmer must make each year.…”
