Advances in Microalgal Research in Brazil

Abstract: Microalgae research has attracted interest worldwide and in order to advance algal biotechnology in Brazil, government has been funding several projects. In the last 10 years, two main funds were provided by the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) agency to researchers in Brazil, who study the potential uses of microalgae for biomass, bioproducts and biofuels production. These funded projects addressed aspects of algal strain identification, development of algal cultivation tech… Show more

“…As a result, a fund was opened for research focused on biodiesel production from microalgae. In 2013 a new governmental investment was made with the partnership of CNPq for biofuels and bioproducts from microalgae [ 11 ]. Since these investments, microalgae research in Brazil has been developing and mobilizing several public institutions and academic laboratories.…”

“…Brazil has also made a significant contribution in promoting the creation of biodiesel from microalgae oil [ 82 , 83 , 84 ]. Currently, the Petrobras company, Brazil, is researching and investing in microalgae production in the petrochemical sector, while the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (MCTI), through the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), is committed to investing significant funding in research endeavors in the tertiary institutions and research institutes to promote cutting edge research on obtaining biofuel from algae [ 82 , 84 , 85 ]. Countries in Africa are far behind in this regard, and there is a need for them to do more and to become committed to promoting the production and commercialization of biofuel.…”

“…Microalgae are studied as a possible raw material for biofuels production due to their rapid growth and the ability to accumulate neutral lipids that can be converted into biodiesel. In their composition, microalgae contain carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and fatty acids [1]. Previous studies have produced biodiesel from algal lipids that had similar properties to those of fossil diesel or other common biodiesels [2].…”
