Background and Aim: Antimicrobial resistance poses a major threat to global public health. Foodstuff of animal origin can serve as potential vehicles for the dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and resistance genes to consumers. In view of the lack of knowledge about antimicrobial resistance in bacteria associated with goat milk, the aim of this study was to report species-level identification and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of a large collection of Staphylococcus spp. isolates recovered from raw goat milk in Brazil. Materials and Methods: A total of 434 Staphylococcus spp. isolates originated from 510 goat milk samples in Northeast Brazil were investigated. The isolates were obtained by conventional microbiological methods. Species identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed by means of a semi-automated system using a panel for biochemical tests and broth microdilution method for 19 antimicrobial drugs. Results: Although Staphylococcus aureus (22.6%) accounted for the majority of the isolates, a total of 13 different non-aureus staphylococci spp. were identified. High resistance rates against erythromycin (40.8%), and the beta-lactams ampicillin (45.9%) and penicillin (42.9%) were observed among S. aureus isolates. The most significant findings were related to the resistance against quinupristin-dalfopristin, a drug of last resort used in human medicine to treat infections caused by vancomycin-resistant S. aureus and enterococci. Conclusion: The high diversity of Staphylococcus spp. showing phenotypic resistance against different antimicrobial drugs encourages further investigations on the real impact of these bacteria as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes to consumers. Furthermore, the potential impact of technological processes, such as pasteurization, fermentation, and maturation, on the maintenance and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance among the microbial populations in milk and dairy products must also be investigated.

Small ruminant mastitis is a serious problem, mainly caused by Staphylococcus spp. Different virulence factors affect mastitis pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate virulence factors genes for biofilm production and antimicrobial resistance to β-lactams and tetracyclines in 137 staphylococcal isolates from goats (86) and sheep (51). The presence of coa, nuc, bap, icaA, icaD, blaZ, mecA, mecC, tetK, and tetM genes was investigated. The nuc gene was detected in all S. aureus isolates and in some coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). None of the S. aureus isolates carried the bap gene, while 8 out of 18 CNS harbored this gene. The icaA gene was detected in S. aureus and S. warneri, while icaD only in S. aureus. None of the isolates carrying the bap gene harbored the ica genes. None of the biofilm-associated genes were detected in 14 isolates (six S. aureus and eight CNS). An association was found between Staphylococcus species and resistance to some antibiotics and between antimicrobial resistance and animal species. Nine penicillin-susceptible isolates exhibited the blaZ gene, questioning the reliability of susceptibility testing. Most S. aureus isolates were susceptible to tetracycline, and no cefazolin or gentamycin resistance was detected. These should replace other currently used antimicrobials.

A mastite é uma das doenças mais frequentes em rebanhos leiteiros causando prejuízos na saúde, produtividade e no bem-estar dos animais e, consequentemente, na rentabilidade das propriedades leiteiras. Por esta razão, desde o começo da modernização da pecuária leiteira, os produtores têm procurado práticas eficazes para minimizar a ocorrência de mastite em seus rebanhos, sendo uma destas a utilização de produtos homeopáticos. Diante disto, o presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a eficácia do medicamento homeopático para mastite BioBoi® na incidência e prevalência de mastite subclínica em vacas em lactação tendo como parâmetros o teste CMT (California Mastitis Test) e os resultados da CCS (Contagem de Células Somáticas). Vinte vacas, em diferentes estágios de lactação, foram divididas em dois lotes, sendo um grupo controle (GC) e um grupo tratamento (GT). O experimento teve duração de 59 dias, de 14 de janeiro de 2020 a 13 de março de 2020. Foi utilizado medicamento homeopático para mastite BioBoi® adicionando 1,8 kg a cada 30 kg de sal mineral, sendo que cada animal do grupo tratamento recebeu diariamente 135 gramas, ou seja, 8,1 gramas do produto por animal. O grupo controle recebeu diariamente, somente o sal mineral na proporção de 135 gramas/animal. Foram realizadas três coletas de amostras para análise de CCS; sendo uma no início do experimento e as outras duas com intervalos de 30 dias, bem como cinco testes CMT, sendo um no início do experimento e os demais com intervalos de 15 dias. Os resultados foram calculados estatisticamente, onde houve diferença significativa entre as médias de CCS dos grupos controle e tratamento, demonstrando a eficácia do medicamento e a redução na incidência de mastite do grupo tratado, enquanto no grupo controle houve um aumento. Em relação à prevalência, houve uma discreta redução no grupo tratamento. Em relação a ocorrência de novos casos durante o período do experimento, enquanto no grupo tratamento houve uma redução do número de casos de mastite, no grupo controle ocorreu novos casos de mastite. Conclui-se que a suplementação com medicamento homeopático para mastite BioBoi® foi clinicamente eficaz.
