Mammals of Cajuru State Forest and surroundings: a neglected but important Protected Area for the Cerrado conservation in the São Paulo state, Brazil

Abstract: The Cerrado has been severely impacted by anthropogenic disturbances, with a tiny proportion of its original extent remaining in its southern portions. In the state of São Paulo, only 7% of this vegetation remains and relatively little is known about the biodiversity of these fragments. To fill this knowledge gap, we inventoried medium and large-sized terrestrial mammals of a neglected region, including a sustainable use protected area, Cajuru State Forest (CSF), adjacent native vegetation remnants protected b… Show more

“…Regarding the higher muscle mass of P. palaeno in pastures compared to Cerrado, two plausible hypotheses should be tested to clarify this pattern. Food quality drives dung beetle physiological condition (Servín‐Pastor et al., 2021), and dung beetles that are using pastures potentially are using cattle dung, which is markedly distinct from dung types from Cerrado mammals (e.g., Chrysocyon brachyurus , Nasua nasua , Puma concolor ; Pônzio et al., 2022). Thus, food quality could be increasing muscle mass of pasture P. palaeno compared to Cerrado ones.…”
