Abundance and composition of the medium to large-sized mammals in a private area of a REDD+ project in Acre, Brazil

Abstract: The implementation of private areas focused on conservation of species and habitats, combined with REDD+ policies, has become an important ally for biodiversity conservation, expanding the conservation areas of the most varied habitats, covering key groups such as large mammals, which are extremely important for the maintenance of ecosystem services. In the upper region of the Purus River in Acre, Brazil, an inventory was carried out using camera-traps, of medium and large mammals community in a private REDD+ … Show more

“…The few records of terrestrial mammals are a reflection of the method used which was more suited to recording arboreal species (NCR, 1981). Remnant forests are important and need to be maintained and conserved, as they are relevant for the conservation of mammals and may harbor a part of the overall biodiversity (Botelho et al, 2018;Shanne et al, 2020;Silva et al, 2021). However, there is a need to create ecological corridors between other remnants to ensure gene flow and to meet the ecological demands of the species (Pardini et al, 2005;Boyle & Smith, 2010).…”

“…On the other hand, large mammalian species experience relatively more hunting pressure since they provide more meat (Peres, 2000; Isaac & Cowlishaw, 2004). These species are also associated with larger area requirements, making them more vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation (Botelho, Borges, & McFarland, 2018). Additionally, they have lower reproductive rates, longer gestation periods and longevity than smaller species (Bodmer, Eisenberg, & Redford, 1997; Isaac & Cowlishaw, 2004; Liow et al ., 2008; Metzger et al ., 2009).…”

“…In Brazil, the Amazon Forest concentrates one of the largest biodiversity in the world [17], which draws attention to the exuberant beauty of native species, becoming the target of traders, consumers and wildlife trade [18]. The State of Acre, inserted in the southwest portion of the Amazon, has much of its territory covered by forests, is in one of the areas with the most endemic plants of the Amazon [19], besides being considered one place of extreme importance for the conservation of different taxonomic groups [20][21][22][23].…”
