The mealybug, known as Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is an important polyphagous sap-sucking insect pest attacking okra plants (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Family: Malvaceae), causing plant desiccation, deformation, and fruit drop. The present work focused on evaluating the relationship between P. solenopsis population numbers during the weeks 9, 15, and 20 from planting and the okra yield in Armant district, Luxor governorate, Egypt, during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Data showed that as P. solenopsis population numbers increased, the okra yield gradually decreased at 9, 15, and 20 weeks of okra age after sowing in each season. Also, an increase of one individual of the pest/leaf resulted in a loss of okra production of 0.007, 0.004, and 0.004 kg per plot and 0.008, 0.005, and 0.004 kg/ plot (10.5 m 2 ) in the intervals of peak activity of the two seasons, respectively. Consequently, okra yield loss % was increased by 0.32, 0.19, and 0.18% and 0.33, 0.21, and 0.18%, respectively, in the aforementioned weeks in 2021 and 2022. The results support the assumption that P. solenopsis populations reached their peaks at 9 weeks from okra planting and caused the highest loss of okra production and yield. At week 20 However, the peak of P. solenopsis populations was less effective, resulting in maximum expected production and minimum expected loss of okra yield throughout the two years. Therefore, the P. solenopsis infestation, the severity, and the okra plant susceptibility to invasion are known to be among the most important factors contributing to okra fruit yield decline.

Background The infestation of the fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] in maize is currently becoming a serious problem, and it might endanger the future maize crop in Egypt. We conducted this study for the current status of S. frugiperda infestation on maize and survey & identification of the associated fungi in Luxor Governorate, Egypt. S. frugiperda invasion began on maize plants were detected during the period from the 3rd week of June until the corn harvest. Results As for the larvae counts, and the infestation percentage, there were three peaks recorded for each of them in each season, which were displayed at 1st week of July, 1st week of August and 1st week of September in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. As well, there are the highly significant positive relationship between the larvae population and the percentages of Infestation by Pest. Conclusions Thirteen fungal species were recovered from infected maize ears (picks). The identified fungi are attributed to the genera Aspergillus, Fusarium, Myrothecium, Penicillium, Rhizopus, and Trichoderma. The fungal species; A. flavus, A. welwitschiae and A. niger, A. brasiliensis had the highest incidences followed by T. viride and P. variable. These findings can help farmers and decision-makers form effective strategies to control this pest.

Proteomics Analysis Reveals Hormone Metabolic Process Involved in the Regulation of Kernel Water Content Induced by Exogenous Abscisic Acid in Maize

The water content of maize kernels during harvest is a critical factor influencing grain harvest practices globally. Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a pivotal role in grain development during the grain-filling process. Yet, there has been limited reporting on the regulatory mechanism of grain dehydration induced by exogenous ABA using proteomic techniques. In this study, two maize genotypes with distinct dehydration rates, DK517 (fast dehydration) and ZD1002 (slow dehydration), were treated with ABA after the heading stage. Results revealed a 20% lower yield in DK517 compared to ZD1002 following ABA application. Sixty days after pollination, the grain water content decreased to 23.55% in DK517 and 30.42% in ZD1002 due to ABA treatment. Through proteomic analysis, 861 and 118 differentially expressed proteins (DAPs) were identified in DK517 and ZD1002, respectively, as a result of ABA treatment. GO analysis indicated that the primary metabolic process, nitrogen compound metabolic process, and hormone metabolic process were significantly enriched among the DAPs in DK517 induced by ABA, while these pathways were absent in ZD1002. Twenty-four and fifteen overlapping DAPs showed contrasting responses in the two maize genotypes after ABA treatment. Notably, the expression levels of six known ABA signaling genes, including SnRK2 and DRE-like proteins, were downregulated in DK517 but remained unaltered in ZD1002 following ABA application. These findings underscore the distinct effects of exogenous ABA on the grain-filling characteristics of different maize genotypes, emphasizing the importance of the hormone metabolic process in regulating kernel water content induced by exogenous abscisic acid in maize.
