Effect of slope on the forest structure of the Atlantic Forest domain in southern Brazil

Abstract: The mosaic landscape composition of forest fragments located on high slopes, shallow soils hinder ecological interactions and the survival of plant species. This study aimed to show, in an environment with these characteristics, the effect of the environmental gradient relating the soil, slope, and vegetation of a fragment of the Montane Seasonal Semideciduous Forest. The forest structure was sampled in 12 continuous rectangular plots, with 30 X 20m, totaling 0.72ha. Soil samples were taken by drilling every 2… Show more

“…The increased slope gradient may in uence soil waterholding capacity, resulting in a narrower range of species that can thrive within the same climatic zone in SJ, consequently leading to lower species richness compared to NG. The negative correlation between species richness and slope aligns with previous research (Souza et al 2024). Additionally, the higher slope in SJ may contribute to micro-topographic variations within the region, such as Danxia landforms, providing diverse microhabitats.…”

“…2018; Ramiadantsoa et al 2015;Souza et al 2022). Other mechanisms should be considered when including topographic factors in corridor proposals, since that reliefs with higher percentages of slopes increase ecological resistance and directly in uence temperature, precipitation and regional soil (Wu et al 2021; Li; Zhou; Yi 2022).…”
