Using bifidobacterium and propionibacterium strains in probiotic consortia to normalize the gastrointestinal tract

Abstract: The gastrointestinal microflora regulates the body’s functions and plays an important role in its health. Dysbiosis leads to a number of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, inflammation, atherosclerosis, etc. However, these diseases can be prevented by using probiotics – living microorganisms that benefit the microflora and, therefore, improve the host organism's health. The most common probiotics include lactic acid bacteria of the Bifidobacterium and Propionibacterium genera. We studied the probiotic… Show more

“…The common feature of these three bacteria is the ability to produce propionic acid. Our results are similar to the study by Dyshlyuk and co-authors [106] where moderate antimicrobial activity using a version of the agar spot method was found for Propionibacterium jensenii B-6085 and Propionibacterium thoenii B-6082, but not for Propionibacterium freudenreichii B-11921 and Propionibacterium acidipropionici B-5723 against pathogens Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella enterica ATCC 14028, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa B6643, Proteus vulgaris ATCC 63, and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644. Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp.…”

“…Entretanto, com o avanço nos estudos sobre a temática, as pesquisas sugerem que essas substâncias podem trazer benefícios diversos no contexto do adoecimento (ORTIGÃO et al 2020). Por se tratarem de microrganismos vivos que exercem efeitos positivos sobre a microbiota gastrointestinal, os probióticos, quando ingeridos de forma sistemática, impactam a saúde de forma geral (DYSHLYUK et al 2023).…”

“…However, other bacteria and yeasts have also been recognized for their probiotic properties, such as B. subtilis, Propionibacterium spp., and S. cerevisiae var. Boulardii [140][141][142][143]. The mechanism of action of probiotics relies on their metabolites, the colonization of the host's barriers (i.e., skin and mucosal epithelia), competition for nutrients, and production of antimicrobial agents [144], such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, bacteriocins, bacteriocin-like proteins, and biosurfactants [145][146][147].…”
