Updating the knowledge of sand flies (Diptera, Psychodidae) in Rondônia State, Brazil

While broad distribution of P. hirsutus is notable in Rondônia, few studies have reported this species in abundance ( Torchitte et al 2020 , Silva et al 2021 ). Females were observed to be infected with promastigotes identified as L. naiffi in the State’s central region ( Gil et al 2003 ), as well in some rural locations of Porto Velho, where the DNA of this Leishmania species was detected ( Silva et al 2021 ); however, another study reported females infected with L. braziliensis DNA ( Costa et al 2021a ), reinforcing the possibility of the vector role of this sand fly species in the maintenance of Leishmania .…”
